There are at least three areas that one should visit while travelling in Xiamen: Gulangyu Island circled with blue; Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street circled with red; and the water park area circled with purple.
This post is a short one about Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street. Almost every Chinese city has a pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants. Xiamen is no exception. You can shop high end and low end goods in the same general location. You can also sit down for a nice dinner or grab some food from a street vendor. And if you get tired of shopping, you can relax while catching a movie.
It is clear that the main shopping street had a recent face lift. The street looks nice while at the same time feeling unauthentic. The side streets are where you can find grit and authenticity. It is also where you can find the food that makes Xiamen's pedestrian street different than other cities. The side streets are full of an unimaginable variety of seafood. You don't need to eat it to enjoy. It is fun just to peer into every shop to see if you can discover something new.
Visiting Xiamen's pedestrian street is a great way to kill half a day. The street itself is near the ferry terminal to Gulangyu Island so you can take a look while waiting for the ferry.
