So I have always been an early adopter and user of Uber services taking advantage of better pricing and convenience than conventional taxis can sometimes offer yet I have always shunned the mysterious Lyft. As soon as I touched down in Vegas I was suprized by the sheer number of people pushing for people to sign up on the streets holding billboards and handing out cards to new users who can enter a code and get 10 dollars off of 5 rides for a $50 savings overall on 5 rides. Being a uber user for some reason I always shunned Lyft as the black sheep and never gave them a bother until I realized giving them a try would save me $50 dollars on my vacation.
The experience was phenomenal.....I noticed that the majority of drivers drive for both companies now and as I was jumping in for my rides I asked the pros and cons and just felt out the drivers for their honest opinions. I heard some interesting points which had me thinking. First off the #1 complaint was that uber is taking too much right off the top from these independent contractors driving compared with Lyft, to the tune of close to 25% percent. As a consumer I noticed paying surge rates which could total 1.2-3.00 times the normal rates were often times slipped in and I noticed the rates were much higher during peak times (late afternoon and throughout the evening. I found Lyft to be 10-15% cheaper than uber throughout my journey and I found myself checking the rates of both before making a commitment.
The hotels are not working with uber to push their services I also noticed. In Vegas they make it extremely difficult to find the drop off and pickup locations and they tend to throw them into back corners of the hotel properties reserving the easiest access to the taxis and limos. I think Uber and Lyft should really make a push with the casinos to get much better visability for their service and not make it so confusing with pickup locations in really big cities. One of my Lyft drivers mentioned he was an ex cabbie and regardless of the fact that uber and Lyft are taking on the taxi rates city by city; they are hiring close to 5k taxi cab drivers across the city. It is going to be really interesting to see how the squeeze by uber and Lyft will have an effect on fares overall. I loved the convenience of both Uber and Lyft but honestly sometimes it's a bit easier to just hop in a cab and not think about where/when/ and who is going to pick you up and worry about your battery in you phone not dying while your waiting for the drivers phone call. Either way take advantage of the new user perks both these companies offer as they start the beginning of a long and tough fight for market share. I just hope the consumer will end up with cheaper fares!
