I conducted a little test of the Google translation software at translate.google.com. Basically I followed the example of an old parlor game. I began with a sentence in English and then had the software translate it into nine other languages before translating it back into English. Here are the results.

Weird. I was just doing something similar last night with Japanese nonsense to English. I just typed in some random characters, and then copy and paste them repeatedly. You would think it would keep repeating the same translation, which it sometimes does to a point, but then it will spit out something comprehensible
