Ukrainian embroidery shirt (Vyshyvanka): tradition, ornaments and symbols

Today wearing embroidered clothes, we pay little attention to the values and traditions of wearing symbols hidden in her designs. And this - the whole story.

The most common color of the fabric from which sewed shirts with embroidery - white. Even the poorest people in Ukraine has always been a festive white shirt-embroidery - let patching, but white.

Distributed were also embroidered in ecru, these shirts are gray or cream color.

But black shirts traditionally been considered the color of sorrow and grief. And earlier this shirt, if dressed in some regions, it is only older men.

There were also embroidered in blue, they were supposed to wear or women in the age, or a little girl who is far from marriage.

Red embroidered shirts symbolized symbolizes love, passion, beauty and fullness of life.

The Ukrainian national tradition have one color, two-color and multi-color embroidery on the shirts.

This monochrome embroidery were more common only in Poltava and Chernihiv in some areas. This vegetable and geometric ornaments made white on white. This shirt looks gentle and elegant. Sometimes white pattern encircles black or blue stripes.

It is estimated that two-tone embroidery preferred in the Kyiv region and the Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky and Cherkasy in the regions as well as in the western part of the Kirovograd region. The main colors of Kyiv ornament - white, coral red, shaded black. In this region, it has been distributed as a vegetable and geometrical ornaments.

In the center of Kirovograd region, as well as Odessa and Mykolaiv regions were also distributed two-tone embroidery. But here it was decided to allocate red pattern black or blue thread. Moreover, the combination of red and blue embroidery entered the Ukrainian tradition earlier than the black.

In general, the farther to the south from Kiev - the motley, multi-colored embroidery. This is - a typical south ornament.

But for vyshivanok Volyn region is characterized by simple designs made just like a red thread. At the same time dominated by floral patterns in the northern part of the region - the berries, flowers, leaves, and to the south - geometric.

Polychrome (multicolored) shirts are typical for the Carpathians, Transcarpathia, Bukovina and Hutsul.
