If you are an African, you'll understand what I'm about to say.
Almost all the countries in the world have their traditional wears to fit their culture and ceremonies. I'm only talking about the good things that comes with traditions.
The Yoruba traditional wedding ceremony is one of the best in the world. It's rich in tradition and colorful
Before I give you a full doze of how the traditional weddings are being done all over the world, let me briefly explain who the Yorubas are. Yoruba is an ethnic group of South Western and North Central Nigeria. The Southern and Central Benin are also included in this ethnic group.
The Yorubas have a classic way of doing their wedding ceremonies. And that's what I'll be discussing with you today.
How's the traditional wedding being done in a Yoruba land?
First and foremost, their local outfit comes first which happens to be the "iro and buba with gele".
I hope that you aren't lost. The iro and buba wrapped with gele belongs to the ladies while the Agbada, shokoto and fila belongs to the men.
These are the attires that the Yorubas put on for any traditional event that is being done all over.
The yorubas love to showcase themselves in so many ways, their foods are superb also. They love the " gbegiri and ewedu, ponmo, garri, elubo and pounded yam.
Together with their different types of stews.
The Yoruba traditional wedding is the opposite of a white wedding. The two weddings in quotes "white wedding and a traditional Yoruba wedding are both classic in their various ways.
But to day, I'll be focusing more on the Yoruba traditional wedding.
Just before the wedding takes place, the groom is expected to have met with the bride's family. And their meeting is what I call INTRODUCTION.
An introduction ceremony is getting to meet the two parents and exchanging words and greetings with one another.
When the groom is set to go to introduce himself to the bride's family, it's a must that he goes with his parents, siblings and if possible his very important friend to say that he would like to get married to the bride.
And that he is also capable of taking care of her. And while he is going over to the bride's place, it's a must that he goes to her place with various sets of goodies that the Yorubas term as " eru iyawo".
Before they now eventually pick a day for the wedding. It's a must that both the bride and the groom dress in their traditional wears without any hesitation.
Before the elderly ones in their midst now finally blesses their union.
Have you witnessed any traditional wedding before?
Feel free to share yours.
