Why do brides marry in white?

What many consider to be an ancient Occidental or even religious tradition (the color of untouchedness) did not become fashionable until the beginning of the 20th century: the white dress for the bride. Before that, women were married in their respective Sunday state, that is, in their best dress, no matter what color it was. Often it was black or at least dark and could be carried on after the wedding. That was convenient and, above all, cheap.

Only around 1850 - at least in upper layers - white dresses prevailed in brides. The impetus came from aristocratic circles: Maria de Medici married in 1600 in an eggshell-colored silk dress, embroidered with golden ornaments. Shortly thereafter, she did it to Princess Elizabeth of England, who married in 1613 in a white and silver Brokatkleid.

Queen Victoria finally became white when she became popular. In 1840 she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg in a cream-colored dress and a white, short lace veil. Young women of the bourgeois upper classes were enthusiastic and soon emulated her, the simple bourgeois daughter needed a little longer, she married a while further in the dark thread.

Technological achievements such as looms and sewing machines have made fabrics more affordable, and since about 1920 it has become customary in Europe and America to marry in white.

So this tradition influence also into the earlier Ottoman empires folk and todays Republic of Turkey.

White is the color which can be mixed with any other color easily. A bride also has to mix with new people after marriage. A philosophy in our community.
