NASA, yeni bir gezegen keşfi için geliştirdiği 337 milyon dolarlık uzay aracı TESS’i (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), bugün SpaceX Falcon 9 roketi ile uzaya fırlatılacak. Dünya dışı yaşamın ve yaşanabilir gezegenlerin keşfini yapacak olan TESS, bilim dünyasında da amacından dolayı ‘gezegen avcısı’ olarak adlandırıldı.
Önümüzdeki 2 yıl boyunca 200.000’i aşkın sayıda yıldız incelemesi yapması beklenen TESS’in tek görevi de bu olmayacak. Çeşitli gök cisimlerini ve büyük kara delikleri inceleyecek olan uzay aracının yıldız tanımlama gibi konulara da fayda sağlaması bekleniyor.
