Interesting. I see it like a loop where the experience and mostly errors are generating the improvements. Many mistakes performed during experiments generated important discoveries. Also the time, the environment plays a major role, because you can have a sound and interesting theory but practical means are not existing yet or those practical means are not good enough to validate it.
