The use of paper money and coin has already started. Checks, money orders, cashier's checks were the first. Then credit cards were introduced decades ago. Then along came the debit card. Oh, and let's not forget Paypal and the Google wallet. We're also able to swipe our smartphones at certain retailers using payments scans.
I actually can almost envision physical dollar bills and currency will be a distant memory within the next generation.
