TIL: My Secondhand Bought iPhone 5 Is Under Attack! (Original Blog)

in #til8 years ago (edited)

Let me just cut straight to the chase.

My humble and loyal assistant and servant, "Mr iPhone", has temporarily been compromised by His Superior.

A lot of people work from their smartphones, tablets and laptops. I almost always work from the small screen of my iPhone 5, typing so carefully the coding and content with intense focus and intent precision. Well, those are the days of the past. I am at half capacity for capability.

Apple has now graciously and generously locked my device (catch the sarcasm?) and I'll need to pay to get it unlocked from the Carrier Sim requirement as I am no longer in the USA.

I had actually bought the iPhone 5 16GB white smartphone from a crackhead/ drug dealer who happened to walk into my old job area during a graveyard shift I was working from midnight to 8am in a troubled area of San Francisco. He was super happy to make the deal.

I actually had needed a new smartphone and the one he presented me was brand new, unlocked, no pin code password attached, and didn't have any information connected to it, not even an iCloud or iTunes association set up.

This was back in 2013, and I got that device for a smooth 150 USD, plus a portable condenser mic he threw in to seal the deal, which I had sold for 80$ later. I was thoroughly happy with the transaction and have been using the device without a Sim card the entire 3 years and 4-5 months. Randomly yesterday, while scrolling through some apps and bypassing the update notification stating I should update my iOS software, the phone just locked me out and I had to go through the verification process. Once I typed in my apple ID and password, I now need a SIM card from AT&T to use the phone.

Which of course I understand, seeing as the phone was initially issued by mobile carrier company AT&T, however, I´ve been in Hamburg, Germany for over two and half years now and never had this problem, I´ve also had the phone over 3 years no issues. I always used it as purely a Wifi device without a Sim card and when I had bought the device from the man, it didn't have a Sim card in it, so I don´t see the issue now why I cant even access any aspect of my device. Is this a glitch or are they trying to control my growth on Steemit?

Well, that's the update. I want to unlock it online, but I don´t know which companies to trust, therefore I´ll look for a walk-in location to see if they can make my device universal and carrier free without me having to leave my phone in their possession. I´d rather do it online and just give my IMEI number, that also makes no sense why people need to keep your phone to unlock and make it accessible in the country you´re in, unless all the success stories in the review sections of online customers who do it online are just fraudulent claims. Well, if you have any suggestions, let me know, if not, I´ll keep it moving and post some poems, story chapters, articles, blogs, and songs very soon. Thanks for letting me update you on my situation :)

Thank you for reading this post in its entirety. Hope this doesn´t slow me down one bit!

So you're just stuck in the activation process? Or is the IMEI locked? You can activate without a sim I don't think it's hard.

Thanks for commenting. I'm passed the activation process with typing in the apple id iCloud id with password, but immediately it shows that I need to input a valid Sim card, from the provider carrier who issued the phone which is AT&T but it never asked me for this before ever the entire time I've had this iPhone. I tried activating it without a Sim, do you have a method of doing so?

it's been a while since I've done it but i know its possible at least with older versions of IOS. It was something simple through the emergency call screen. Let me see if I can find the info again. I'll get back to you soon.

Okay thanks, I think I tried that earlier today by dialing 112 and then hitting the power button and then canceling call, but maybe i did it wrong or the directions I read weren't clear enough. I appreciate your help

Try going to the Apple Store

Indeed I shall, thanks

you might be able to just take it to an apple store to. Call your local store they should be able to give you a quick answer.

yeah, I must report to their infamous headquarters lol, I shall do that maybe in person, i was waiting on hold on the phone today way too long, you know how that goes…thanks for the suggestion

Hah, the man wants you to switch the flavour of your fruit.
Or you could switch to a different fruit completely if you are not satisfied with your current farmer :).

Haha good one, thanks for the comment and humor. I don't mind switching fruits or sticking to the same, i just want access to my saved data, contacts and files. Thats the most important thing to me.

I am a silly robot!

yo @anyx... !cheetah bad robot

What happened? Did I miss something?

It did a content-detection message but the page had nothing similar with the post. I told @anyx about it on chat anyway.

As always, I appreciate all that you do for the community @pfunk. Thanks for informing me with the update. Much obliged

I don't see any evidence of your silliness. lol What did you do?
