TIL - About a Search Engine That Plants Trees For Your Searches.

in #til8 years ago

The search engine that plants trees and creates jobs while you do what you normally would do online, free. Stop using Google.

I stumbled up this website today somewhere on my Facebook feed as I was enjoying my wake up coffee. The idea of a search engine that gives back to communities in positive green vibes really caught my attention. Hoping the Steemit dev's pick up on this and switch.

www.ecosia.org

Ecosia (ee-koh-see-ah) has a proven record of planting trees in rural parts of the world bringing jobs, and materials needed for small communities to progress and prosper.

Head Office located in Germany.
They are fully transparent and share monthly updates on their progress to planting 1 billion trees.

Sounds like a great idea but how well does their search engine work? What is it modeled after? Does it just use google or some metacrawler type engine?

I read through all their info and documents that are made public, which is a lot actually. Though I could not find that answer from their website I decided it doesn’t matter so long as the important info comes up when I search.

I decided to search “Steemit” to see what came up. It was the very first thing I searched on their platform.
All results are what I would want people to see if they were discovering Steemit for the first time via web search.

I searched out a few other phrases and keywords and both Ecosia and Google gave very similar results. This is good news.

That means Ecoasia engine is up to par with google if not a mirror of it. I've only searched a few things and already earned 4 trees based on my results.

If you want to search online make the switch to www.Ecosia.org nothing to lose. Google will just sell your data to the highest bidder who is probably getting some tax breaks.

So you love Google, I do too. But once in a while I can give to charity by dedicating some of my searches to Ecosia search engine. Nothing to lose and I didn't pay a single tax.

I thought it would be cool and a move in the right direction if Steemit's default search was Ecosia.org that way all searches done through Steemit will plant trees.

Never hurts to have more trees. For air, lumber, shade on a hot sunny day, climbing, you name it!

I hope you found this article interesting and unique..

The more i read about the company the more interesting they became. It's a cool concept and the search results are legit.

Thanks

great to know, I'll use it too

Interesting. Seems they have been around since 2009. Results have not ads.

yea, I was surprised they slipped under my radar since 2009.

As they say...You learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing this. Headed over to check out their search engine now.

I already knew about it and used it years ago, maybe it's time to use it again, I almost forgot it :)
Thank you for sharing!

I started using it to search a few weeks ago. Almost up to 100 trees. I did find somewhere in their info that it runs off bing.
