Am not sure to follow, but let me try.

A star emits light, and light is basically information on how the start looks like )at the moment of emission). Light is however traveling at the speed of light (yeah... I think you can guess why :p) and it takes thus some time to reach us here on Earth. Therefore, what we see today is the star as it was long time ago, when light was emitted.
