There are some people who are freaking out about this whole thing. I mean, there are a considerable amount of Americans who are addicted to the Tok, and for them this is the end of an era.
The boomer in me
I tried some months ago to learn the platform, to use it to share with the world my guitar building adventure. I found, among other negative things, that the only kind of content that thrives on there is really short form gimmicky stuff, and shortly after deleted the app.
Maybe it is that I'm getting old, and I'm simply not able to adapt to this new paradigm. But, the idea that the dopamine hit has to be so banal, so sugary, takes away any desire someone like me might have to share with the world.
This new paradigm is not exclusive to TikTok I have to say, but it's dominant there, and there lies the biggest difference.
The cynic
There's a part of me who finds this whole thing somewhat laughable. I mean, what is really happening is not what is being sold over the counter. The American government is not protecting it's citizens, or what have you, it's making sure they are the ones that do all the spying.
Yes I'm sure there are people out there taking the position that they spy on us because they care, but I have nothing nice to say to those people who abandon their right to privacy, except for "you don't speak for me bruh".
Fertile ground
Even though I said that I find the Tok going away as a net positive, I can't help but to painfully accept that the vacuum it leaves, can be, and maybe should be, taken as a great opportunity.
I'm aware that LEO recently launched with 3speak the ability to do short form content, and as much as it's not my cup of tea, there's a demand for it out there, and that is undeniable.
However, as things stand now I'm sure the initial pulse on the line will be an uptick in Instagram usage, a piece of news that is sure to make The Zucks quite happy.
I've never used it. The whole short video thing seems a bit crap to me. I've seen some on Youtube and they are rarely satisfying.
It's hilarious that people have moved to other Chinese services that may also get hit in similar ways. Do people really need that 'hit'? A few years back it didn't even exist.
I assume it will still operate in the UK, but I don't really care.
I was talking to my wife about this, asking her for an opinion and she's informed me that there's already an alternative out there... something called red book, but its also a Chinese app... so who knows what's gonna happen now
I was reading about that. Seems they were not set up for a flood of US users. I assume those influential people people moved there and didn't even have the conditions in English. People just sign up anyway.
We need them to move to Hive instead. I know InLeo does short videos.
Yes!
I don't get it either.
You're a boomer?
Me too, probably a more seasoned boomer (DOB '47). My husband loves Tik Tok and he's 4 months older than I am. I don't get it. Only watch it if he asks me to look at something he finds amusing.
Technically I shouldn't be, but I'm told constantly I'm a boomer by the younglins... My niece says it almost weekly (shes 15) hahahaha
My mom also uses TikTok and tries to share stuff with me, but I had to tell her I deleted the app so she would stop. (I said it lovingly, but I'm pretty much done with that app)
I hate TikTok, but I hate authoritarian government censorship more.
no argument from me there...
Have you heard of RedNote? The new Chinese short form content app that suddenly Zoomers are flocking to just as TikTok is banned. I'm not a fan of such content, but I am even less a fan of censorship. As I understand it the complaint was that China was harvesting user data, but the actual problem was that it didn't censor anti-semitic content. China may not care about Semites, but it cares enough about user data to simply produce a completely different, but utterly the same, company and app to harvest that data.
The wheels of injustice turn just as slowly as those of justice, and companies providing short form content can be spun up overnight. Censorship isn't the cure for anti-semitism. Perhaps Semites playing nice is?
Thanks!
"Un Mundo Feliz"
creo que este es el mejor video que he visto en mucho mucho tiempo... gracias hermano
Me alegro que te haya gustado mi pana. De hecho pensé que te gustaría. Este es uno de los pocos creadores de contenido en Youtube a los que sigo desde hace tiempo. Más que todo por sus videos de corte filosófico de alta calidad. Te recomiendo que le eches una chequeadita a su canal que sospecho que te va a gustar.
I’m over there a little bit on the Tok and I hate it. I’m not a fan of short form and I’m not a fan of vertical video 😂 Call me part of the old YouTube generation, but I can watch it for a couple of minutes and then I’m gone.
no way Captain... We should be doing some dance challenges and join the "fun".
LOL
the people doing lives staring at the camera make me want to rub siracha on my face.
