It’s a happy New Year indeed for the rampaging hit movie Tiger Zinda Hai, which has now roared past Shah Rukh Khan’s 2014 musical heist comedy-drama (now there’s a genre for you) Happy New Year to claim 13th place on India’s image_search_1514741762681.jpgall-time biggest global hits list as of today.

Assuming the number holds up, the estimated ₹16 crore ($2.5 million) in domestic collections on Saturday would represent a surprisingly strong hold, down just 54 percent from the film’s opening Saturday. Friday had dropped a more typical 66 percent, but brisk holiday business could see Tiger’s second frame bring in more than ₹40 crore, which would make for a magnificent New Year.

When it released in October, 2014, Happy New Year earned a domestic gross total of ₹295 crore, and ₹90 crore overseas. Tiger Zinda Hai was just short of that total on Saturday, but if it collects the ₹40 to ₹45 or so crore that now looks likely for the weekend, it will push well past the Shah Rukh Khan hit’s lifetime global collections. In fact, it won’t just be Happy New Year that Tiger takes down for its prey. SRK’s Dilwale (₹394 global gross), Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots (₹395 crore), and Salman Khan’s own Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (₹399 crore) will all feel the Tiger’s power as it roars past them to claim 10th place on India’s all-time global hit list.

Next stop: Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express, which stands in 9th place all-time at ₹422 crore ($65 million) in global box office revenue. Tiger Zinda Hai should speed past it this week.
