Three tune Tuesday: Best Drummers

Hey!

I wanted to make one of these posts again, before posting about a cat, which will eventually be a bit longer post.

Three Tune Tuesday — started and popularized on Hive by @Ablaze — is where I share three of my favourite tunes or performances, centered around a theme. Today's theme? Drummers who shaped the sound of their bands and left an indelible mark on music history. Let’s dive in!

You know how there's always some feud on the Internets, that who's the best guitarist, bassist, singer, musician... a drummer? I know, the age-old question of who best fits a certain category and is basically the backbone of the band, which ever instrument we are comparing with.

Here are my nominations for the best drummer though...

1st. nomination: John Bonham, Led Zeppelin

I know everyone wants to claim Moby Dick as his best performance, but I want to bring fort Bonzo's Montreaux as one of his best ones. Not quite as long as Moby Dick, but quite enjoyable nevertheless.

Bonzo's Montreux highlights his innovative use of electronic effects, which was groundbreaking at the time, blending classic drumming with experimental flair.

2nd nomination, Ron Bushy, Iron Butterfly

Did you know, that when Doug Ingle played his new song “In the Garden of Eden” for Ron Bushy to write down, he was so drunk, he slurred the words and Bushy didn't quite hear them right, so he wrote “In-a-Gadda-da-Vida” instead? I'm not sure if it had gained such a following, if they had kept the original name and words.

The song is 17 minutes in its entirety, and Bushy added his own touch to the song, playing a drum solo, that became an iconic piece in rock history, representing the psychedelic era. Bushy however took inspiration for his solo from the next nomination...

3rd nomination: Ringo Starr, The Beatles

While Ringo Starr rarely played any actual solos when in The Beatles, he's nevertheless been the inspiration and idol of many drummers since. The End itself heavily inspired Ron Bushy's solo of In-a-Gadda-da-Vida.

Frankly, I think Ringo Starr stands as one of the very best drummers if not the best. But I am biased being somewhat a Beatlenick myself.

Sort:

I'd choose Bonham :)

Awesome selection. My choice of best drummer though goes to Mario Duplantier of Gojira but maybe I am also biased since their performance in the Olympics is still very fresh to me.

Thank you!

It did occur to me that my list focused heavily on English-speaking musicians, even though there are incredibly talented drummers all over the world. That’s always the challenge with these kinds of lists — you can never truly capture the best because the sheer number of phenomenal musicians out there makes it almost impossible.

I remember Gojira's performance at the Olympics — It was undeniably powerful, but I have to admit the details of the melody and drum section have faded from memory. I think it's time for a rewatch to properly appreciate it again! Thanks for reminding me.
