Moments of foggy thoughts

in #thoughts6 years ago (edited)

Since I am unexpectedly at home, I get the chance to write a little but with my head where it is, I think I am going to keep them shorter than usual and likely more personal. Lucky you :D

One of the things that is good at the moment with prices falling away is that there is a much better chance for distribution and while price keeps dropping, those with the means can buy in. Those without the means, well they are going to be in the same position they always were. Over the last however long people have been on Steem earning, many (if not most) have taken their earning off platform. There is nothing wrong with this, your earnings are yours, as is the life you will live.

The people who are selling at these prices though have to sell for various reasons and those buying can buy. In all of the time I have been here I have said that Steem (and crypto in general) is not suitable for most people to rely on as a form of income because it is very volatile and will be for some time to come. However, (as long as the project survives) those who are increasing their holdings are essentially decreasing their own volatility in the system, they are making themselves less exposed to the risk of the market as they can use their holdings to secure some portion of the inflation pool without having to sell coins.

Those who have been consistently selling for life purposes however will of course continue to be in an area of instability. It is a shame really because those who suffer the most in the real world are likely to continue to suffer the most and forever be tied to the wills of others. Even those who continually jump from platform to platform and wherever their best opportunity to earn is, unless they are building a foundation for themselves, they will always be in the hand to mouth category and at the mercy of the technology and communities they leverage.

People often expect a community to be charitable when they are in need but they are much less willing when they are the ones asked to be charitable. To be charitable, one has to have something to be charitable with, and that resource has to be suitable to satisfy the needs of the moment. Being charitable with time doesn't help a hungry person fill their stomach. But, if very few are willing to build up stores of resources for lean times, where does the charity come from? I guess people are happy if all live in the moment and do the same, and the survival of the fittest will kick in during famines.

This is the problem I often come across with Steem as there is an expectation that those above have to help those below even though many of those below could have been the ones who could have pulled some of the weight. If there were more people in the middle Steem Power ranges areas, there would be more people to spread the load but, there isn't.

People assume that those who have higher SP than themselves live some kind of life of luxury but this is a very poor assumption. Many of those with higher SP I know are living lives at a much lower level than those around them but, they are working toward something more in the future, this takes time, effort, work, risk. People can say live in the present but that is only when they don't have to worry about where they will get their next meal and if their next meal continually relies on the service of others, they are likely in for a rough time.

Yes, there are a lot of resources around in this world that are poorly distributed but there are also a lot of resources that are poorly utilized by the same people who are complaining about the distribution. People who sold 1 Steem at 8 dollars can now buy 24 Steem with it. But, how many have that 8 dollars left? Even if they do have it, they are unlikely to buy into Steem because after all, the project might fail. Pretty interesting behavior from those who simultaneously want better distribution and a charitable community on Steem.

There are a lot of complexities to the world but the simple thing to understand is that we all must live our own lives, all must live in our own skin, at least at the moment. The expectation that others must provide for us is going to lead to a whole host of issues for our experience and is likely going to cause us to suffer. Suffering is psychological, pain is physical, it is a distinction that many don't make.

For me, I am pretty weary overall but I do have meaning and purpose in my life, I have an abundance of pains but not so much suffering. Some people are happy to sit around behind a screen or do as they do but when it comes to the practicalities of experience, they are looking for the help of others to end their suffering. This is even more of an interesting position for those who call themselves individualists, unwilling to acknowledge social aspects, even though they themselves leverage many social systems to provide for them.

I wonder how many people on Steem could leave in a real-world community behaving in a similar way as they do here. Would a commune that grows its own food and builds its own shelters accept those who sit and watch, commenting on all that is wrong with what others do? People want a better world as long as they aren't the ones who have to invest themselves to build it, to risk their 'own' resources. They like to 'live in the moment' and say if only people would do this or that... what happened to their life in the moment? In the moment people are doing.

Well, I am going to go and get some food for my wife. A hungry wife is not a future life I want to live.

It's true what you are saying. The ones that are selling will never ever improve and will just stay in the same position. I still have what you said when I first started saying this was like a university degree. A degree is a minimum of 5 years and that is my mindset. Money is tight right now as we are going through a recession in South Africa ,but I will find some somewhere before this turns back up. Nine months for an account that has only $300 but it could quite easily be $3000 and it doesn't change a thing for me. Growth is the key element now and nothing else should matter.

It is going to get interesting when markets turn to see how those who have bought in behave when they have significant power.

I hadn't thought of that. Hopefully they stay the same and just carry on doing what they had before. Some of the users I know who have powered up quite a bit are at least community thinking which is good.

I got mine...Check your WhatsApp...😋

Right now it's just over 3000 euros to buy all the SP I currently hold. Seems cheap considering time and effort?

Crazy isn't it.

3/4 months real life work. But, would I have the network of friends I do now, certainly not.

The friends, the experience, the work put in, the conversations, the learning, the skill development, the self-discovery ... money buys none of it.

Yep.

I did add 'Blockchain research and analysis' to my CV last week and have had a couple of recruiters bring it up - I haven't had to explain too much yet :)

Not sure who's in the right/wrong there, which probably says it all really :)

Well at this point I'm hodling. Usually, I use my steem to purchase internet subscription so I can stay active. But right now it cost a lot of steem to do that and I really can't bring myself to selling (I even doubt if my vendor will accept my steem right now). And I really do not have any other use for my steem, so I just have to hodl.

Also, I have to fall into the habit of gambling with my steem (you might have heard of magic dice). On a positive note that has made me power up most of my liquid steem so I don't lose them all in a flash. Like today I powered up about 20steem leaving just 1steem.

Given my pending earnings and current steempower, I'm about 150steem away from becoming a minnow. I would have never had thought it possible in just roughly four months.

For no,w, I just want to have fun and write, not worrying about price. My only major concern is how I will manage my time as I need to cut down on my data consumption and still remain active.

When there are more use cases for direct steem it will be better I think. Don't lose it all playing dice, the markets are a big enough gamble as it is ;)

A hungry wife is not a future life I want to live.

Very wise words :)

Lessons of the past :D

The economy of Steem is still building its foundation. When you consider that value is being created by engagement and development of DApps here in the ecosystem it leads me to believe that it is only a matter of time when the value begins to be realized through the community supporting it. The balance of influence is slowly shifting to those becoming more active despite not having the SP behind them but it is the engagement they have which as the price of Steem falls becomes more valuable as it provides more access to SP over time.
