Been a few years I've written a post like this on my phone while my battery is depleting. I even removed my 4g connection and put the brightness lower just to write a bit more on top of already having been on power saver mode all night.
Feels kind of weird the things we take for granted in the modern day, internet, warm food, cold beverages and sitting on your ass most of the day doing "internet stuff" on the computer. As someone who's been "full time" hive for the last few years I wonder how much time it would take to explain to a web2 person what I do on a daily basis and why I get rewarded for it. Or at least until he fully understood it and would that make them wanna give it a try?
I often wonder what things I take for granted in general and feel it's important to back off every once in a while and to try and see things in a different perspective.
Every now and then for instance I try to do something on hive, you could say going back to my roots as it was some of my main activities back in the early days of the chain. Checking the "recent" post list of all posts published and going through to see if I can find some gems that others may have missed out. There's as usual quite some "spam" but not as bad as when the market was at the top. there's quite a lot of short form content as well using dapps which is okay but hard to quickly determine if the users that seem new are legit or not. It takes quite some work and it is a bit disappointing that that work never really differs in rewards compared to just voting for familiar usernames.
Coming up with a system that rewards manual voters and filtering through posts has been something we've been striving with ocd but the best solution would be something that at the base layer of hive could work without it getting abused.
that's some of the things that "keep me up at night" if you will. There's definitely ideas brewing but nothing too easy to implement or without seeming like we're becoming the next stalker-ware.
Comments are usually a good indicator that someone has manually reviewed a post and upvoted it. I know there's some people who think "if they want more curation rewards they should just power up more hive" but they seem to ignore that this effort doesn't really matter how much stake you have and I'd argue the more stake you have the easier it is to put less effort into manual curation and engagement.
Why put a couple hours a day into work when you can get the same returns autovoting or trailing?
while I've noticed comment voting has become more of a norm lately it seems that it's mostly those who can afford to give proper votes out who do it which may cause people to come back more often to those authors compared to others creating similar content and being just as engaging. The authors with voting power usually spend it more on their own posts and I'm guilty there as well cause we don't have endless amount of time on a daily basis to also go out and spend vp om comment sections of others.
Either way, there's some things I'd like to experiment on here soon regarding the issues mentioned above. It's not going to be any big projects, I already got way too much on my plate as it is but I'd like to see how it plays out and the effects it could have on the platform if used by many.
Anyway, I'm down to 3% battery now so I guess time to cut this short.
Let's hope I'll be back to responding to comments sooner rather than later cause it's starting to get boring without electricity. I'm even considering picking up a book, ew.
Title came to mind due to lack of electricity from that one song from Pineapple express or superbad, not sure which one.
We certainly realize taking things for granted when we lost it. Power outage these days is hell since many of us are heavily reliant on it.I hope it wasn't too long and back up again. Don't your place has generator? typically people over here invest in one of those to keep the electricity running even during power outage.
The other day I was explaining how hive works for someone who used to work at tiktok. It doesn't take them long to understand since the mechanic these days are pretty similar. The person was also working as a moderator and that was even a breeze telling them what is curator, curation and moderator are over there. But for average web2 users that's going to take a little bit of time since they probably never heard of any of hive terms the first place.
I don't think the song was in Superbad, but I could be wrong. I watched that movie like 10 times in the theatres with my friends, no joke LOL. Likely Pineapple express!
Yeah I hear you on that, it's interesting to get in a situation where the "comforts" of modern living are a bit less available. Losing power for a few hours, or days really puts things into perspective! It's been a while since I've written a post on my phone but the last time I tried it, it sucked because PeakD wasn't formatting on my phones screen so I could see anything I wrote. I had to write on Ecency which is ok but wasn't my normal look and feel lol.
I always tell new people, don't waste your voting power on comments. Hit posts only for a long time but make sure to get out to other peoples posts to leave some comments consistently. It's been a great strategy and some do it to farm vote comments, but others do it for enjoying what is written I would like to think.
I love that movie lol, have watched it so many times as well. :D
Autovoting and trailing is bad for interactions, but good for earnings indeed.
Rewards would be distributed better when autovoting an trailing wouldn't be possible.
But I'm guilty as well. I don't have (or make) the time to go through all the posts thoroughly every day.
But since I upgraded my stake I did lower the threshold, so I can give a few more manual votes.
It's a small step, but it is one...
I like the idea of rewarding comments. It's true as you mention that large stakeholders vote on comments too and that helps engagement on their posts.
But what I missed when I came to Hive years ago is engagement on my posts as a newbie. As an amateur photographer (but thisnis probably the same for other subjects too) you want appreciation. This came in the form of rewards, which very nice. But it was a pity I hardly got any comment back then. It's understandable since you have no network, but it made me focus more on the rewards then the interactions.
And I think that more newbies experience that. Their welcome post is overloaded with comment and invitations, but it often stays with the same posts.
It would be nice if you could only vote on a post when you wrote a 50+ word comment. That would really help engagement I think.
I remember there used to be some kind of 'bot' that would scout comments and give a decent amount of upvotes. However, it would be even better if this could be done manually to ensure that the comment is actually valuable and of good quality.
It would also be great to see comments being rewarded more often because it encourages greater engagement with others, rather than just focusing on creating your own content for rewards.
Do you mean Engage?
Yes, you got that right. I think it's a good project. From what I remember, it was doing quite well back then.
I can't imagine how long that would take for me. But I reckon that writing this sentence alone would take me embarrassingly long.
A +-a year(?) ago I introduced hive to my classmate. He seemed interested so I even lent him some HP for a start.
From what I remember I did not have such advantage when I startedHe only lasted about a month. He thought that he would get rich just by curating without making any posts. Few times I suggested that he should make a post. Introduction post, music post( in the past he used to create music)...gaming post... But he did not listen. So he only earned some cents during that month. He was disappointed and left saying that this is not worth his time. Shame really. I believe that he may have done very well had he stayed here and tried posting.I find joy knowing someone actually read my post by leaving a decent comment under my post and even though my voting value isn't so big, I do encourage them with the little I have hehe.
I also love leaving a thoughtful comment under people's post, it make them feel seen and heard rather than just auto voting them and moving on.
I am looking forward to the project you're talking about and if it's the one that requires people to help out I am more than available to help out too.
Hope you charge your phone soon hehe, sorry about your depleting battery, it can be a pain in the ass.
Yeah.. and I hope the electricity will be back in your area.😊
Well, reading book is a good way to avoid the radiation effects from the gadgets. 😊
Hadn't thought of it that way!
Been meaning to read the second book of Ender's Game! (especially since they never made a 2nd movie :/)
Oh.. I had no idea about the book too.😊 I want to read books yet, sleep always prevail. 😄😄
It would be great if you could collaborate with smaller users with positive votes in our favor that would help a lot, you know something I thought that electricity problems were only in countries not as developed as ours but I see that it is much more common than I imagine
I see that you as well are reducing your involvement in Hive. I see quite some stagnation on this amazing ecosystem also from other writers.
Why do you think is happening and what this ecosystem missed to go to the next level?
?
I'm posting a lot more now than before and am pretty much more active than ever. :D
Dunno, I'd suggest checking out the hivefest recordings, may give u some clue on an answer to the same question others asked + it was quite entertaining.
I started voting on comments a while ago. I feel like it's my way of saying I appreciate the interaction. I'm not at the point where my vote is worth a ton. In fact, it's probably dust at this point. When I wasn't delegating so much HP to Holozing it was adequate though!
It is true that well-known and popular people are given more votes in hive, in most cases the quality of the content is not considered. Find a way to solve it
Yeahhhh sheeshhh! I need to rebuild my Hive account ASAP. It's a real mission though.... one thing that I regret is ofcourse powering down and removing a ton of Hive from my account... I could have had far above 10k hive by now and it's not actually the loss of Hive thats upsetting... it's more the " I can't vote comments anymore" that's off putting...
I can't even reward the bloaks commenting on my posts 😅😅 not crying about it but I can sure as fuck kick myself for that... I still vote them but to what outcome 😆😆
I do also follow a voting trail but I prefer to vote manually within #Hivegaming and #Hivemotors.
Also this might be fucked up to ask but is there a way to take over a community if you feel the people running it doesn't really care about it anymore? Or nah?
To answer your last question, you won't get hold of the community account unless they give you the keys. Controlling the community account gives you more "legitimacy" if that's worth anything at all.
The best thing is probably start your own one, Hive is big enough to have multiple communities of the same genre and it's better for the community as a whole as it gives community owners more incentive to do a better job of it.
Btw, didn't you have a hobby community? That's a good concept
Well it's not that I want to take it over persay but I wont mind being some sort of curator in it.... the community did well but I fear it's dying out I'd rather try to keep it alive if I can...however starting a new one wont actually attract a new follower base (atleast I'm doubtfull of that) there are a few similar communitys... I tried speaking to the admin but he doesn't reply me and I don't want to spam...
Regarding the last one.... it's bit tricky as I don't really know how to shine a light on it... the Hobby community... it's like people go where they think the votes will come from.... I'm a bit lost with that one to say it plain and simple... however I might need to have a sit down this weekend and do some brainstorming...
Anyone can curate in a community and it's great that you are passion enough to want help keep the community alive.
If the community owner is ignoring you, then it's likely they've given up or they don't want external help. And even if you end up curating, either in an official or unofficial capacity, don't forget you're still restricted by what you can do, eg maybe you want to run some contests, or writing prompts, but perhaps the community owner has different ideas.
Feel free to ping me on discord if you want to talk more
Yeahp, well I only want to join as one that has access to writing posts on the community name... like contests or being a curator or something that can make a change... but I suppose no use in crying about it then ey..
Well you were part of the Pinmapple community so I would definitely try and give you a ping this weekend, highly unlikely 😅😅 I'm a really awkward one. However I do think I need to get my community kicked off... or try atleast 🙃
agree with what living said, I guess if a community leader and their curators have gone inactive you can always go back to just posting directly to your blog or in the ocd community which welcomes posts that don't fit anywhere else or I guess in this case if there are no active communities in that niche any longer. Not saying this will guarantee curation but if you want the additional views the subscribers may give you.
I get you... the thing is I want to go bigger... not sure how yet... I might end up supporting my own community if all else fails but I don't want it to fail, I think it might just die a little... if I keep posting it'll stay somewhat alive.
However it's hella hard starting one and getting people to actually post in it... see no harm meant with it but most people follow the money 😅 and posting in a quiet community is a little offsetting for most.
you can always give them a small tip instead of voting if you can't pass the min threshold to reward them!
Now that's actually a great idea... I never even thought of that... thanks!!
I think, they should not be related, curation needs time and someone who does not have availability will not do manual curation, irrespective of his stake. For majority of the people hive does not provide the cost of living.
It sounds strange but that's how we spend a lot of time doing, as you say, "Internet Stuff" but for some of us it's the best way we have to get extra money, which works great.
Greetings @acidyo ,
This is a subject which is of interest to almost every one at Hive.
It has been said a few times....that people read their replies first...I know I do.
Everyone can reply even if everyone cannot tip comments.
Personal interaction is a draw here at Hive for Bleujay....I do miss those with whom I interacted in the past....who are now on voting trails....no interaction.
As far as monetary incentive to comment ...I would hope not..if one is savy one can tell the' I am being paid to talk 'attitude. Those who chat ...Chat...those who do not...do not and probably for a good reason. ^__^
Thank you for writing on this topic.
Kind Regards,
Bleujay
