This is my First Steemit Post, and I'm sure it SUCKS.

in #things7 years ago

So, here goes.

I've wanted to write stuff, like a blog about stuff, for a while now. And I wanted to have audio, like podcast-ey stuff, cause I work a lot in audio. And maybe some video, cause every damn thing created with audio now has some damn video component to it.

And, of course, I wanted that first post to be good.

Scratch that. Not just good. FREAKING AMAZING!

Actually, I didn't even really care that much about that, either. I wanted it to be profitable.

REALLY PROFITABLE.

Like, if I could make $700 dollars a day writing one disjointed blog post, I could just do this and like sleep and eat and stuff. I could cook really cool things Sous Vide and with the Instant Pot, and just constantly be buying food. Or just sleeping.

But this post isn't amazing. No clue how profitable. My guess is more than a dollar, cause, well, why not? If it's moar than ten, I guess I'll be happy.

I'm sure this post sucks. The first time I do anything, it ain't all that great. Maybe that's the point.

A few years ago, I hired a career coach. I probably paid her a little over $1,000 for all the coaching and such. It was well worth it. As a direct result of that coaching, I saw my yearly income increase by tens of thousands of dollars.

She pushed me to do certain things that I didn't want to do (but were utterly critical to do), created new habits and new ways of looking at things, and taught me a bunch of new ways to look at my career.

She also happened to give me the best piece of advice I've ever gotten.

My task was to make some cold calls to agents for representation. As she gave me my task to call 10 agents for the week, she said "The most important thing is to make the calls. It's fine to be awkward on the phone, or have the conversation go horribly. Give yourself permission to suck. IN FACT, I GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO SUCK."

Hearing those last words was possibly the most freeing feeling in my life. Making ten calls to agents sounded veeeeery daunting.

But having 10 awkward conversations? Hell, I COULD DO THAT!

And I did!

To be fair, all the conversations weren't awkward.

However, the one that most the MOST awkward..... the one I thought I screwed up the most..... also turned out to be the most fruitful!

So, that's where I'm at. I'm writing this cause I wants to be a better writer, talk about interesting things, and such. Define things a little better.

All than will have to wait for another day.

Currently, I'm just writing to write something. And I don't know if this sucks or not, but I damn sure have permission to suck!

It sucked a little, it was interesting a bit... Welcome.
