Super Rare
Even more rare is the fact even one of these exists in Thailand, rumor has it there is also a silver one around somewhere, making this 1 of only 2 in the country. Around the world, a total of just 225 of these were ever produced, costing over half a million dollars at the time. Nowadays, values are north of 1 million dollars.
Imagine my surprise today being alerted from a Thai car blog to this advert on facebook marketplace. Pictures below for those who don't wish to open the link.
History of the XJ220
The Jaguar XJ220 was made by Jaguar from 1992 to 1994. It was designed to be a high-performance, mid-engined supercar, in original concept form it was to be specified with Jaguar's famed V12 engine allowing it to run up a top speed of 220 MPH, faster than any other production car available at that time. Although ending up with a lowly V6 out of a Metro, it still achieved the promised performance and became a true halo car in it's day.
The XJ220 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produced over 550 horsepower, which was an impressive figure for the time. It was able to reach a top speed of 220 mph, hence its name, and it could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The XJ220 also utilized great big twin-turbochargers, which helped to reach those power and acceleration figures whilst sounding absolutely bonkers.
The XJ220 was also notable for its design, which was inspired by the Jaguar XJ13 prototype race car. It had a sleek, aerodynamic body that was designed to be both fast and efficient, and it featured a number of innovative design elements, such as a clamshell hood and a rear wing that could be adjusted to optimize the car's aerodynamics.
In addition to its rarity, the XJ220 has also become known for its impressive performance on the track. It has competed in a number of racing events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished in third place in 1993. It has also been used in a number of other racing series, such as the British GT Championship, where it has consistently performed well.
Overall, the Jaguar XJ220 is now a classic supercar that although was reviewed with speculation and disappointment at the time of release, has grown as an iconic symbol of Jaguar's racing pedigree and pinnacle of the 90s era. It is remembered for its impressive performance, despite having 'only' a V6 engine. Rarity and peculiarity drive values higher. XJ220 will always be a highly sought-after collector's item for car enthusiasts around the world.
Bonus Shots
The time I saw one of these in the flesh at a small exotic car show in Singapore, back maybe 10 years ago now. Using the light to get this interesting perspective on the massive rear end of this supercar.
Many Thanks!
