Due to recent trade war between US and China, both countries' consumers had to suffer due to increase in prices for many products.
In order to gain market share and be more competitive, Tesla decided to take a hit and reduce the price to it's cars by as much as 26%.
A Tesla spokesperson said (via Reuters):
“We are absorbing a significant part of the tariff to help make our cars more affordable for customers in China,”
Tesla started Model 3 orders in China last week, updating the price to 540,000 yuan (~$78,000 USD) for the Long-Range dual motor version and 595,000 yuan (~$86,000 USD) for the Model 3 Performance version.
I have no doubt that China will be the biggest market for Tesla, due to incentives, brand affinity and China's massive push towards electrification of transport.
