This device is able to transcribe the words we say without using the voice

A computer interface developed at MIT can transcribe words that the user verbalizes internally, without uttering them out loud.

The electrodes of the device capture neuromuscular signals in the jaw and face that are triggered by internal verbalizations. The device also includes a pair of bone conduction headphones, which transmit the vibrations through the bones of the face to the inner ear.

The headphones allow the system to transmit information to the user without interrupting the conversation or interfering with the user's hearing experience, as they do not obstruct the ear canal. According to Arnav Kapur, a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab, who led the development of the new system:

The motivation for this was to build an AI device, a reinforced intelligence device. Our idea was: Could we have a computing platform that is more internal, that merges humans and machines in some way and that feels like an internal extension of our own cognition?
