How a student developed his own augmented reality helmet that competes with HoloLens, Microsoft AR glasses

in #technology6 years ago

Stan Larroque, a 24-year-old student at HETIC Computer School, has developed his own augmented reality helmet. The main competitor is HoloLens, Microsoft's AR glasses, although they use a different process.

Imagine yourself at 24, still a student, competing against one of the most powerful companies in the world, at least on a particular product.

Combining virtual and augmented reality

The brilliant student has indeed developed a helmet combining virtual reality and augmented reality. Indeed, it looks like a closed VR helmet with two cameras at eye level.

The image from these cameras is transmitted directly into the helmet, replacing the vision while superimposing virtual reality elements with which it is possible to interact thanks to the movement of the hands in front of the camera.

Stan Larroque admits that his camera is not really aimed at the general public. Instead, he cites the example of a surgeon who could be assisted live via information that would add to the actual vision of the patient's body.

Microsoft in the sights

The only real competitor to the student's prototype is, according to him, the pair of HoloLens virtual reality glasses, developed by Microsoft. On the technical side, however, the two devices are very different. Indeed, HoloLens work by transparency, like glasses displaying elements over natural vision.

Stan Larroque is thinking big for his project. In addition to the various offers of purchase of the prototype by manufacturers, the student will be present at CES 2019 in Las Vegas to present his device.

Like what, there's no age for success, as long as you have the talent and the motivation.
