Free Network-wide Ad Blocking with Pi-Hole

While I still believe uBlock Origin is by far the best ad blocking solution available, it only affects the devices that run desktop version of Chrome & Firefox.

Pi-Hole is a free solution that installs on a Raspberry Pi ($35 all in one computer) to block ads on all devices on your network from Refrigerators, SmartTVs, Mobile Devices, and consoles. Will even block ads in mobile games. It has a nice central administration web interface where you can track how it is doing and customize it.

All devices on your network will have ads blocked without any additional software. This is done by using the Pi-Hole device as your DNS server.

Installation on any Raspberry Pi or Debian Based Linux box is really simple:

curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash

You can configure and visualize what is going on using the web interface:

Installation is really easy and can be done instead of 2-3 minutes if you have a Raspberry Pi on hand or a Linux server on your LAN. You can use your router's DHCP to hand out the Pi-Hole DNS Entries and can even run two as a failover option.

It's also a fun project if you have a Raspberry Pi and want to find something useful, or you don't have a Raspberry Pi but want one.

I am using the pi-hole for about an year now and super happy with it !
Best thing is that you don’t have to mess around with ad/ tracking countermeasures on every single device
