New Cyberattack Spreading...Petya.

black-square.jpg

(Picture is a black box I made for something else but is useful here because this is what you'll end up with if you aren't careful out there.)

I'm no expert on how cyberattacks occur but I would hope anybody here would know the steps to take to prevent it. Maybe others can give more information, I'm just here to let you know that another attack like "Wannacry" is happening again.

The Independent posted a story about it and I thought I'd share...http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/hack-cyber-attack-ukraine-russia-wannacry-petya-security-internet-broken-computer-not-working-a7810626.html

There are a few steps I know to take and always do.

  1. Backup all data you want to save on an external harddrive or SD card.
  2. Update your virus and malware scanners.
  3. Never open suspicious emails and be aware of what emails from your bank and other financial institutions looks like.
  4. Don't visit sites that can give you viruses.
  5. Always be aware of the fact that attacks can happen and take preventative measures.

I mainly just wanted to spread the word, and give a few tips there. Keep an eye out for yourself and others!

Sort:

Petya seems to attack port 445 SMB. Block this on your firewall.

What Happens when your infected

danooct1 has a great video on this

Linux and vpn I guess. Windows has more holes in it than a colender.
Main problem of course is when they hit servers, banks, websites etc so no matter how well protected your own machine is there is nowhere to go.

Quite true about the nowhere to go part. That attack on the NHS caused chaos. It's already hitting Spain, I suppose we'll be next here in Portugal.

Yup we can be as careful as we like with our own computers but the big organisations out there can be months or years behind in updates and patches.

This post is getting buried under a bunch of other stuff. I expect we'll be hearing more about it though as it spreads.

Yes it will get buried under "How I made $1000 a week on Steemit and I've only been here a week" posts telling us how crap we are and how to treat this as a pyramid scheme lol

So it will but eventually that will fall off. I made over $200 on my first week but not since. :) I think it's like these places for authors to buy reviews. It starts to show after a while so you're better off not doing the "trend" if you want to stick around for the longhaul.

I've found that posting around 6.00pm GMT has yielded the best performance. Well it has this week so far any way :)

Resteemed :)

I'm running Ubuntu (Linux) so I'm guessing I'll be ok?

I run Ubuntu also. Even if your system is safe though, doesn't mean the companies and people you are trying to connect to at the other end are so sensible right?
But yes, Linux is a much safer option than anything by microsoft or apple.

Resteemed. Good information even when there is not an imminent threat.

Thanks Kelley! :)
