The Advanced Temporary Tattoo:
The 'tattoo' that just sticks to your skin like a childs tattoo, and it monitors your muscles plus more!
What is it?
Researchers have developed a thin, flexible electrode that can measure electrical signals on the skin after being applied like a temporary tattoo. They key innovation being that the electrodes are extremely thin. This new technology was primarily designed to make long-term recording of muscle activity without inconveniencing the person wearing it. The electronic tattoos could have a variety of applications, including to map emotions based on facial expressions, study neurodegenerative diseases and control prostheses.
Why?
The tattoos could be used for psychological evaluations and as a diagnostic tool for Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder that can cause tremors, muscle stiffness and coordination problems. The "electric tattoo" is made up of three main parts: a carbon electrode, an adhesive surface that fastens the tattoo to the skin and a polymer coating that can conduct electricity. The stability and comfort are massive bonuses for the long term, and the quick and simple application on the skin is a huge benefit!
More Work To Be Done:
Now there is still plenty of work to be completed on the data capturing and analysis, but this new tech represents an exciting development in history!
