I think the reason Microsoft priced the Surface Laptop this way is because if they made it cheaper, the average consumer will think it is an inferior product. Also, if they made the base model with 8GB of RAM, there will be no incentive for the average consumer to upgrade to a higher tier.

I am sure you are right, these things are always taken into consideration when pricing. I think ppl would still upgrade because the base only has 128 gb hd, that way the base model is still appealing to students who just want basic productivity and do most things online.
