Science raised human civilization up to the highest peak. For long we are enjoying the benefits of cinema, radio, television, telegraph, telephone, x-ray and so on. Now we are enjoying the benefit of another wonderful invention of science. It is computer which has come forward to work as a substitute of human brain.

Computer is an ultra modern electronic device for storing and analysing information fed into it. It has no capacity to do anything by itself. It works on the basis of commands given by the operator.

Computer was not invented over night. It took long time and hard labour to invent computer. Charles Babez a British professor of Mathematics first thought a formula which could help human brain. His attempts were not crowned with success but he initiated the research leading to the invention of computer. Finally Mr. Howard Akin, an American scientist invented such amachine in 1937 as could solve difficult mathematical problems. So it is Howard Akin to whom goes the credit for the invention of computer. After 7 years electric computer was used in Harvard University.

A computer consists of 5 major components. They are the input unit, the output unit, the memory unit, the control unit and arithmetic unit, a computer performs the following their functions:

1. It receives data.
2. It processes data by various computation.
3. It emits data.

Computer renders a great variety of services for mankind like Alauddins Magic Lamp. It serves man in so many ways that cannot be counted. It translate poems or any part of literature. A farmer sitting in his house can complete the whole process of cultivation from ploughing of the lands to the threshing of corns. Trains and planes are run by the computer. Examination results are accurately given by the computer. Computer is used to extracts minerals. Computer is used to diagnose diseases. Anywhere process operation has been invented by computer as an alternative to surgery. Now a days business trade and Commerce cannot be thought of without computer. It is used to prepare documents, make list of goods, store information and prepare budget etc. It is the computer the help man to conquer the space. Time is not far off when every brain work will be done by the computer.

Everything has its dark sides. Computer has its own demerits. It causes diseases like respiratory distress injury and harms the eyesight of the operators.
Computer is the greatest contribution of science so far made. It renders the greatest service to humanity by substituting human brain and by saving time and preventing it misuse.
