IBM Watson - Will it become the HAL 9000?

in #technology7 years ago

I just love the IBM Watson Technology and have been following it for quite some time. Back in 1983 we saw a movie which is now basically a cult film. The movie featured a AI computer Hal, which decided to take over the world …

IBM Watson

For those that does not know "who/what" IBM Watson is, it is the IBM technical platform which specialises in Artificial Intelligence and have been in development for years. In my opinion it is very successful technology, which will go a long distance. Especially due to the fact that they are targeting the business world to assist with AI. When you target the business world successfully and make some money while doing so, you have more investment money to put back into the research and development to ensure a useful product in the long run.

The Watson technology has been so effective that it actually won the First place prize of $1 Million dollars in the TC Quiz show Jeopardy

Watson is a question answering computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM's DeepQA project by a research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM's first CEO, industrialist Thomas J. Watson. The computer system was specifically developed to answer questions on the quiz show Jeopardy! and, in 2011, the Watson computer system competed on Jeopardy! against former winners Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings winning the first place prize of $1 million.

Watson had access to 200 million pages of structured and unstructured content consuming four terabytes of disk storage including the full text of Wikipedia, but was not connected to the Internet during the game. For each clue, Watson's three most probable responses were displayed on the television screen. Watson consistently outperformed its human opponents on the game's signaling device, but had trouble in a few categories, notably those having short clues containing only a few words.

Watson will this year be used to analyse Wimbledon games to suggest the best matches and automatically generate highlight reels based on the crowd response.

IBM's Watson can apparently do everything. From manufacturing and medical treatment planning to portrait drawing and filing your taxes, there seems to be no limit to what the Jeopardy-winning AI can do. And next week, Watson will be offering its services to the Wimbledon tennis tournament.

The technology is just amazing. Please read the article IBM’s Watson will analyze Wimbledon to suggest the best matches

But what about Hal 9000.

I personally believe that we are very far from computers taking over the world, but I just love this technology. AI will help a lot of industries to become better and more effective. It all depends on the people behind the technology and how they apply it in the real world.

Many believe that computers or robots will take over the world some day. If we look at the speed that technology is moving at and the carelessness of human kind in applying technology, it just might be possible. I for one believe that it will take a very long time for something like this to happen. If you asked me 10 years ago if this is possible, I would've laughed it off.

Now I am not so sure ... WHA HA HA HA HA ... What is your opinion?

Happy Steeming!

AI is becomming more useful by the minute and the level of intelligence will soon exceed the human intelligence.

I do, however, believe it to be very purpose oriented intelligence and not especially useful as a general interelligence.

Merging human intelligence with AI would result in the fastest innovative growth. That is exactly what companies like Elon Musk's Neuralink is working on.

If you could be able to tap into the processors of Watson just by thinking about it then everything would change... Fast.

I believe humans and AI could work in symbiosis. At least until humans would no longer be humans as we know it today.. We are however already cyborgs, by carrying around the entire human knowledge in our pockets 99% of the time.

I prefer to stay human.

Thanks for a great comment and good information. Thanks @ronni ... Followed

Some years ago a friend of mine went to work for Siemens. Recently he told me that they are working with IBM on a AI based machine (something like an full body x-ray scanning ) that will find a wide range of diseases, gathering and analyzing data from a scan. This is the path of AI integration, and with that kind of projects people will trust the technology. I Have to say that even people with a decent technical knowledge are afraid of the emerging AI revolution.

Lets hope he's better than hal 9000 lol

Now we are talking :) Great comment :)

Impressive post , good luck cheers

Thanks for the comment @futuresmart

IBM is starting to scare with its AI. Many companies start using it to replace their employees. There will be enormous unemployment in the years to come

Thanks for the comment @izbing. Don't you think that something like the Blockchain with Crypto Currency might find a way for humans to be employed in other ways? Look at Steemit and a company like VIVA - will actually be paying people salaries via their blockchain. Then computers and robots can do the hard work :) Just joking I know it is not sustainable.

Don't know were this is heading but it's starting to be a bit of a worry my friend. Great post thanks for sharing. Cheers

it is a great pleasure, thanks for the comment @silverbug

amazing

Thanks for the comment

Nice post, best of luck buddy @jacor

Teknologi informasi iya sama siapa yang menang siapa yang mau ikut

BEST platform for a CHATBOT !!!

Indeed :)

Great achievement by IBM Watson this is a future for technology thanks man for sharing.

Thanks for the comment @farhanali

Its going to be interesting to see how AI will change our lives in future. One thing for sure is that lots of processes will be automated. Robots to clean, robots to cooks, robots to shop and deliver shopping. The list is endless, only time will tell. Thanks for sharing your post

Which Watson Analytics edition is right for me?

Easily read with some good info! I for one welcome our robotic overlords :)

Thanks for a great comment :) Love the gif

If you ask it to draw an abstract drawing based on its perceived purpose, I wonder what it will it end up drawing!

That is indeed a great question :)

a Watson your Japanese is very good!

great post. thanks

I'm wondering what happens if and when IBM Watson is used to assist in an individual or business tax return that is flagged for audit?
Would this artificial intelligence "bot" take on an aspect of agency, if it it is found to contribute to falsifying tax records by tax authorities?
This line of questioning could also impact smart contracts in future.
Overall though, kudos to the Watson team!
There are many use cases where IBM Watson can help to eliminate tedious work that humans don't do well, e.g. legal discovery and there will be other use cases in futarchy (prediction markets and statistical modelling ).

Definitely something to think about. Thanks for a great comment @mindposeidon

The level of technology is relative to who you are speaking with about it. Not every facet of the cutting edge is considered for public knowledge. One can speculate about where the pinnacle is but it's all relative. Intriguing subject @jacor.

Great comment @bloomview :) Followed

I have written many things on Artificial intelligence and it's mis calculation. But this one is awesome and unbelievable.

Thank yu very much @angelshare

You are welcome.

I heard about computer vision for the first time today, the ability for a computer to see what's around him/her (it?). Don't know if this is considered to be AI as well, maybe AI+ haha. Sorry slightly off topic but reading this post made me think of this. Off to do some research, the whole AI space is very interesting. I have actually seen a business in the higher education industry assess IBM Watson for their business so it's definitely starting to get traction.

Hi @transptrader, followed you as I like your comments. How are you finding the platform as a newbie? I used to work for a large IT Corporate and evaluated the IBM Watson product as a partner to resell the product to business. It is truly an amazing platform :)

Hi @jacor, thanks for that! That's great to hear. I love the platform, it's so easy to use and the variety of topics discussed and the interaction (probably because of the engagement model) is cool. Yeh I wasn't directly involved in IBM Watson unfortunately so I'm not fully across all its specs but the brief overview I got and from what I read in this blog post it sounds very exciting, but also slightly worrying. Is anyone else feeling like we are actually "entering the future" (if you know what I mean...)?

Cool stuff - upvoted. if you Like AI content, check out some of my articles too.

Best

AI taking over the world is an interesting concept, I don't think it will easily happen, but like they say, if you can dream it you can make it. Scary!!

It is indeed scary :) Thanks for the comment @rynow

Great article. I remember watching WATSON on Jeopardy years ago. AI may take over certain aspects of human kind but I think it still has its limits and wouldn't take over the world entirely. Let me pose a question. If they were to try to replicate WATSON, would there be a difference in "personality" due to the variations within the materials used in making another WATSON?
