Biggest floating solar power station

in #technology7 years ago

Recently, the biggest floating solar power station strated working. It can be found in China, in the eastern region called Anhui. This power stastion belongs to the chinese company Sungrow Power and it leis on 800'000 square meters.

The power station is built on an artificial lake, created where once there was an old coal cave. There are two main reasons why they decided to built it on a lake:

  1. It doesn't occupy fertile soil, which could be used for agricultural purposes
  2. The water of the lake helps cooling down the electrical circuits present in the solar panel.

The energy prodoction of this power station is quite impressive. It can (at nominal power) produce up to 40 Megawatts. This quantity is enough to supply many houses; between 25'000 and 30'000.

Despite the critic that China receive, due to their high pollution emission level, it seems that China is the only very big country, which is trying to do something to change in better.

It is true that it is not said that solar energy is the only or best solution nowadays, but surely it is better than not doing anything.

Looks like a great place for solar panels. The ocean will be full of them soon, but at the same time the ocean will need sun for itself to thrive!

Hi @jeffjagoe,

I don't think we would be able to cover the entire ocean surface with solar panels, for many reasons such as: the amount of material would be needed. It is possible and desirable that some not tourist cities will do it. With the hope that they are not going to impact too much on the local environment. However, studing a bit each specific case, I am sure we can find a solution for them to coexist: energy production and natural beauty.
