So we've been hearing a lot about Solid State Drives (SSDs for short) in tech news recently, and they have gained a lot of hype in recent years when compared to their bigger, thicker, and heavier cousins the Platter-Disc Hard Drives (HDDs). So what are some of the differences? First let's take a glimpse back to the past and see where this all began.
Taking a look back, both competitors had their conceptions around the mid-1950's, but HDD's were GROSSLY more popular in the consumer markets taking them by storm. You wouldn't have even heard of a SSD unless you worked for a bigger company with IT guys. Suffice to say, Solid State Drives didn't really hit the mainstream consumer market until around 2009 and onward, when OCZ Technology and Micron Technology made them available through the PCI Express ×8 and SATA interfaces. The floodgates were now opened.
Boasting of much higher speeds, lighter weight, and a much longer lifespan... Who wouldn't want one? Solid States work by storing data off of Memory, while Hard Drives store data on a platter disk that is constantly spinning. Allow my good friend Linus to break this down:
To the meat and potatoes, let's go over this quickly.

For the average computer user doing basic tasks like browsing the internet, looking at pictures, documents, videos, and music then a platter disk HDD should suite you just fine. On the other hand, if you are doing extremely PC intensive tasks like video or sound/music editing, graphics design, 3D Modeling and more, than an SSD is the way to go.
Please keep in mind that both SSDs and HDDs serves their own purposes. For large amounts of FILE STORAGE, than an HDD is the way to go as it offers much more for much cheaper.
If you are looking for a faster load and boot time for your OS and applications, it's certainly useful to have those run off of a separate SSD.
What do you guys think?

Nice comparison. Kinda one-sided, though.
Not necessarily. Each has their own purposes when it comes to the best value.
You can get MASSIVE storage for cheap with HDD's, but if you try to match it with SSDs then it will cost you thousands of dollars.
The two haven't come to an even ground yet in terms of cost vs storage capacity, so again I must say that they each have their uses.
I often wondered about the different hard drives available, thank you Corey.
Not a problem!
Great breakdown of the differences. I must say I do miss my SSD drive computer. But it's been put to much better use now since I donated my PC to sanctuary then what I was using it for.
And you are amazing for that! THANK YOU AGAIN!
Hi, I recently made a post about connecting a HDD with Intel Optane Memory to make it faster. I also linked my blog in it. Would really love it if you checked it out! :))
Certainly I will. Thank you, @steemit-rusty!
