I think you're right. I know I would have taken more of an interest in history if this were the case. I also if teachers could like events of the past to how things are now, that would also help. One of the things I didn't like about history at school was I could never make the connection between what happened then and why I should be learning about it. As I got older, and I made these connections myself, history became a lot more interesting.
