I'm in exactly the same boat; I fired up a Hive account when Jeff mentioned it, spammed out some comments and likes to see if it was working but alas... nada.
You get some by upvoting comments and having yours upvoted by others. The amount you get depends on your and others' reputation and HP, from what I understand. Every HIVE gained this was takes about a week to be sent to your wallet, so just keep at it and a continuous flow of free money will come.
To be able to interact more with the blockchain to give you more opportunity to make money comes when you "Power up" Hive. Its like a saving account with a lockup period, but by doing so you are rewarded with the ability to comment up and down vote more and make your own posts. Really if you haven't deposited anything into your HIVE wallet and powered up it takes a very long time to build your account status to the point where you can even post or comment more than once every couple days. This is done to prevent bot accounts from gaining to much influence. Now bot users have to invest on the front end, plus if you get enough downvotes its a natural filter for the network.
