Apparently you get reputation as you post comments, which increase the amount you get and give others by upvoting. To increase it further, you can add more power (HP) to your HIVE wallet, which will also increase your Resource Credits, allowing you to post and upvote more. There's also what's called "curation" within the HIVE network which you can set up for automatic upvotes for a passive income.
