“It’s great to be a blonde. With low expectations, it’s very easy to surprise people.”
Pamela Anderson

For the first twelve (or so) years of a person’s life, they are like a camera, recording everything they experience and creating fresh neural pathways in their brain. After that, a person becomes more like a projector and projects onto new experiences what they’ve learned from the old. Isn’t that amazing? By the age of 12, our brains have figured out that we’ve pretty much seen and done all there is to see and do? Of course, that’s not the case, but in order to convince our brain to be receptive to new experiences as not a threat, we have to improve our homeostatic capacity—that is, our ability to recover from events and encounters we can’t predict—we have to learn how to adapt.

Today is a day where you may think you have it all figured it out. You may have tricked yourself into thinking you can anticipate the outcome of a situation you helped to create. But what if you let go of your expectations and allow the universe to pleasantly surprise you? What that might be like? What if your new affirmation became, “You know what? Pleasantly surprise me.” That attitude alone would cover all of the areas of your life that are out of your view, to say nothing of your control. We think we have to do everything on our own to get the results we think we want or need. But what if the cosmos has something in store for us we wouldn’t even know to ask for? Trust me. Today is the day to find out.
