" Chapamong and Loma "
Once upon a time, there lived a poor fisherman and his wife in a land called "Khatom" Chapamong was a hard working fisherman and was well known in his community for the best quality of fish. His wife, beautiful as ever was the talk of the town.
One day, when Chapamong was fishing, he saw an object from afar lying on the cold sands of the Khatom water's. To his surprise, it was a beautiful "Loma" (Dolphin). He quickly turned his boat towards the shore and ran to see it closely. The Loma was tired and gasping for breath but saw Chapamong coming near it. She immediately called out for help. Chapamong said he would have to run along to get some help but the Loma refused as she would be dead by the time he returned. So Chapamong after thinking for a while came up with an idea and he brought a rope from his boat and tied Loma to it and pulled her towards the sea. The Loma at once was back into the ocean, happy tossing and diving up and down in the wild wet waters of Khatom. She thanked him for his help and granted him with '3' wishes that she would readily fulfill.
Chapamong was very delighted to know this and rushed back home to his wife Mangchao to tell her. His wife, on listening to the tale was very over whelmed and asked Chapamong her first wish to be granted. She wished her hut be now made into a castle. Next day Chapamong went fishing to meet his friend Loma and requested her to grant his wish. Since the Loma had promised so the wish was granted and when he returned back home from his fishing, he saw his wife waiting for him in a castle.
Now a few more days passed by and Chapamong's wife desires grew more and so she promptly came up with her next wish. She told Chapamong that now she had a castle and that was not enough but she wanted to be a queen. Surprised at this request but still not wanting to upset his wife as he loved her very much said will go to meet his friend the Loma to request her wish. The Loma was quite taken back not knowing what to do but as promised fulfilled his second request. He sent him back telling him that now he would see the land of Khatom now being ruled by Queen Manchao and when he went back to the shore, was awaited by a chariot to take him home to his castle as now his wife Manchao was the Queen of Khatom. Chapamong stood there for a while, he was now dreaming of how his friends and neighbors would greet and honor him. His wife, the Queen was powerful and wealthy and their lives had changed now and they had everything the desired. Time past by and he stopped fishing, but use to visit the seas for trade and battle.
A few weeks later, the queen seemed to look unhappy. She had a look of disappointment. Chapamong could not bare to see his wife in sorrow. He went up to her and asked her the reason of her unhappiness. He told her of all the good things they were enjoying in life. The wealth and health, and the power she had over the land, but nothing could make her happy. Then his wife came up with the strangest request. The wish to become "God". Chapamong was shell shocked. This was a wish he too did not expect. He thought long and hard about it and if he should really ask his friend Loma to grant it. Would Loma agree and can she really be able to fulfill it. He was very disturbed. Minutes and then hours went by and then morning came; now he had to go and meet his friend Loma. He felt uneasy and disturbed and knew that something bad was going to happen but he couldn't refuse his wife's request as he loved her very much. That day was a day that many in the land of Khatom till date never forget. Chapamong as decided went to the sea with his men in search of his friend the Loma.
There she was, swimming in the deep blue green ocean. This was the most difficult of tasks for Chapamong but he took courage and asked Loma of his wife wish. On hearing this Loma was furious and reminded him of all the good things she did for them in the past. She said that his wife had sealed her own fate. This was a sad turn of such a wonderful friendship and the Loma at once took away everything that was given to Chapamong and his wife Manchao and dived back into the sea, never to be seen again in the seas of Khatom. Chapamong and his wife lost everything and were back to where they had started. Her beauty is now no more popular but her tales of greed are the stories told for children when put in bed.
Moral of the story:
"Be content and satisfied with what you have even if it's a little as greed (The desire for more!) will always destroy you!"
