a rough draft of what I'm working on myself now: (starting in the middle)

March 30, 2017: Rex Tillerson speaking in Ankara, Turkey as then Secretary of State during a joint news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made remarks indicating the US would not be seeking to topple Syrian President Bahsar Al-Assad, stating that "the longer term status of President Assad will be decided by the Syrian people." This and statements from other key members of President Trump's cabinet seemed to allay fears held by regime change opponents and was seen as a hopeful change of direction in the United States' foreign policy towards Syria and it's democratically elected President, Bashar Al-Assad. Trump's appointed UN Ambassador Nikki Haley also made similar comments on the same day stating "Do we think he's a hindrance? (Assad) Yes. Are we going to sit there and focus on getting him out? No."

March 31, 2017: Following Tillerson and Haley's statments then White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer reinterated a new US non-intervenion policy towards Syria during a White House Press Conference stating that “With respect to Assad, there is a political reality that we have to accept"

April 4, 2017: the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack...
