Step 1 : involves the plain page and if you have a reference image which is to be illustrated you can place it below
and start tracing the image with pen tool ...
Simple tracing starts like this

Start the background of the image , which makes everything easy.

I reduced the opacity to 40% so that my anchor points don't collapse. Now I returned my opacity to 100%.
