gm passengers of planet Earth!!
It's a lovely morning here in the city and the perfect time of month to check on our lovely red wigglers. Let me show you their home.
Here's bin #2 on the left with the girls. Bin#3 is on the right with all the worm tea, which we're taking out and placing them in recycled yogurt containers and kept in a cool dark place. We'll make a 50/50 mix of water and worm tea for the garden.
As soon as we opened the bin, I noticed some kind of fungus growing. It doesn't seem too big or dangerous, so I just left it there, but if you know anything about this, please feel free to chime in.
let's see what's on the menu!
yum!
Banana peels, papaya peels, some lettuce, broccoli, eggplant and broccoli. We give them about 6 kilograms of fruit and vegetable scraps per month and leave them there to live their undisturbed worm life.
After feeding them, I like to cover the top with plain cardboard from boxes, or in this case, from egg cartons. I've found that it helps balance out the moisture in that the fruits and veggies provide and keeps the bins smelling nice and fresh.
The final step is to label the side of the bid where we served dinner because we always like to rotate. That way they can eat on one side and then move to the other side when they're done. I like to think they are undisturbed this way.
Thanks for stopping by and see you next month for the worm move!
Circular economy ♻ making waste into a resource🌍
That's absolutely right!
We produce less food waste and turn it into nutritious compost for our garden.
We joked with @pamarias this morning that we could eventually sell worm compost and tea to our neighbors, but that's just a thought; maybe one day 🪱🪱🪱
Yay! 🤗
