NOTHING IS GUARANTEED, BUT YOU HAVE POTENTIAL
The purpose of this post is simple. It's a pep talk. Maybe it's for you, maybe it's for me. Anyway, I just wanted to help you "get your head right" as you head into this new year. Also, this is a #steemit related post, in case you were wondering.
OVERCOME DISCOURAGEMENT
The very first thing that I'll shout at you time and time again is to overcome discouragement. Many, many people have become disappointed here on steemit and quit. Unfortunately, there are even many wallets with hundreds or thousands of dollars just sitting vacant, since the owners moved on and forgot about steemit, at least for now. It's sad, but true, and it could happen to you. In frustrating times, I have often been asked if I ever felt like quitting. Every time that I have been asked this, I have shared honestly and openly. Has @papa-pepper ever thought about quitting steemit? YES. Really? Absolutely. Actually, I used to seriously think about quitting every two or three days.
Sure, we can see that I'm glad I never did quit, but discouragement can tempt any of us. It is also worth mentioning, that MONEY is NOT always what discourages people. Sure, you may spend a long time on a post and get a few views and a few cents while others post a meme and make bank, which can be discouraging, but other discouragement can come too. There has been more than once when I was tempted to quit and leave just because of interactions with others. We are a global community with a lot of different worldviews, faiths, beliefs, opinions, and ideas. Thankfully a lot of the interaction here on steemit has been amazing, but such is not always the case. A few times I've received comments and replies that I'd rather not deal with. These were also discouraging times for me. Again, thank fully I never did quit.
To wrap up this section, I'll share this simple truth. If you quit there is NO CHANCE that you will succeed.
YOU CAN ONLY CONTROL A VERY LITTLE BIT
Remember this above all. You are not even close to being in control of most things. First of all, grasp this concept and understand. Here are a few things that you cannot control.
You cannot control if whales vote for your posts. You can't even control if minnows do. You can't control if anyone sees your post. You can't control who chooses to follow you. You can't control if anyone flags your post. You can't control the value of any crypto including BTC, SBD and STEEM.
Understanding this should help you as you move forward. There are a lot of variables that you cannot control. Now that you understand that, let's talk about what you can control. You can control yourself, and what you do. I've seen a lot of people do a horrible job at this, and they reaped what they sowed. Some have completely destroyed their accounts and sabotaged themselves, effectually committing STEEMICIDE. Their usernames and account are forever tainted because of their previous actions. You can control your actions. You can control what posts you comment on, and what you say in your comments. You can control how you reply to the comments on your posts. You can control what posts you upvote. You can control what you post on, and how you make your posts.
Hopefully, you are beginning to understand a little bit about "your jurisdiction." Basically, you should be under your own control, and choosing wisely what you do, or don't do.
IT'S A BLOCKCHAIN
Please remember that whatever you post here is "forever" recorded in the blockchain. I'd recommend some of the following. If you think about these things ahead of time, it may help you later.
Don't incriminate yourself. This is one of those things that some think should go without saying, but it seems like it still needs to be said. If you are up to illegal things, maybe it's best not to post them on the internet, much less on the blockchain. If you don't want something coming back to haunt you, maybe it would be best not to make it public knowledge. That's just my suggestion; you know best. Watch your interactions. Everyone can get offended, discouraged, or have a bad day. Still, it may be best not to act like a complete jerk-face. Any comment you make will be forever documented. Any angry rant post that you make will also be. I've seen too many choose to act foolishly or even idiotically on the blockchain not to at least mention it here.
PROGRESS
I'll end with this potentially more encouraging bit. You need to measure your own progress to succeed. If you learn anything valid, apply it. If you earn anything for your posts and comments, it'll be more than you started with. If you make a friend, that may be priceless.
Here, we have incredible potential and the opportunity is amazing. Any improvement that you make is progress, so remember that. You may never get rich, but you're most likely at least getting paid. You may never have the most followers but you are most likely making friends. Also, you're still here, which means that you haven't quit... that means that there is still hope for you. Steem on.
Until next time…
Don’t waste your time online, invest it with steemit.com

Excellent article and excellent point about everything we do here being recorded on the blockchain. I don't think we've (I say we as a populace, not early adopters) quite understood the magnitude of what the blockchain is going to mean one day but for a bit of perspective we are going to hit a point in history where we will have an easier time explaining the full faith and credit of a bitcoin before we can explain the full faith and credit of a fiat currency.
True that! Thanks @floridadad!
I am very encouraged by the positive interactions here on Steemit! Yes there are times where I too have felt like quitting. Just like I've felt like quitting my YouTube channel over the years. Your statement about "If you quit there is NO CHANCE that you will succeed." is SO TRUE. I've learned over the years to just be persistent. Tenacity reaps rewards. Just keep swimming! LOL. Thank you @papa-pepper for being a source of encouragement to this Steemit community and beyond!
Thank you for being my friend! Be blessed Brother!
A nice message for the New Year.
I took a 6 week break from posting recently I kept up curation and comments as I had become a bit jaded and some interactions had discouraged me. It was the best thing I ever did as it gave me the opportunity to step back and focus on what I wanted to achieve.
I'd never leave Steemit, it's a wonderful place, taking a little break reminded me of that and when freinds encouraged me to start writing again I felt renewed vigour. I'll never forget the encouragement and kindness from others while I was on hiatus, it goes to show what an unbelievable community we have here.
Thanks for your insights dude.
You are welcome!
Hey, man. I would like to thank you. Success takes time, and progress can be done every day with a single step, the important is no quit.
I'm new here, I start following you because one of your post were of the firsts I read looking for guidance and advise
@papa-pepper, keep being great!
Thanks! I'll give you an upvote to bump you up off of that 25 reputation.
I really appreciate it, man! I Hope I can be of any help soon. What you do here, it's pretty awesome.
Very good post on overcoming negativity that all of us face, at one time or another, whether on Steemit or elsewhere. I am so glad I joined Steemit, and I wouldn't have if it weren't for @bluerthangreen, who was encouraged to join by you. Thank you!
When I first started, one part of me thought my posts would be hauling in the big bucks right away. That didn't happen. But the other part of me, the realistic part knows it takes consistency and time. So I stuck it out and it's paid off.
This year, I want to make Steemit even more a part of my art business. Who knows? Maybe artists could start selling their physical paintings here and pay in steem. How cool would that be?
Have a blessed and prosperous 2018!
I'm glad to see you here, and it's nice to see you periodically getting a solid payout. Your art is so incredible! You are blessed my friend!
Great post for today...my first day.
I came a peeking on your profile due to the good words of @freedompoint and @freedomtowrite. I look forward to reading more and getting to know you.
Welcome! Yes, the Yeti told me about you on the phone earlier.
So much of this is true but can I just encourage everyone that investing yourself on steemit is great, even through the ups and downs, the quitting and the being on fire. I've seen a level of encouragement and friendship on steemit that is pretty great. However, investing in the lives of others on a personal basis is WAY better. I've loved the relationships that I've built on steemit, but I have to watch myself sometimes that I don't spend so much of my life in my online world that I overlook how many opportunities surround me where I can be the hands and feet of Christ. Thanks for the encouragement @papa-pepper. 2018 will be a balancing act for sure!
Ah yes, STEEM and SBD have a price, but what you speak of is priceless. Very excellent comment!
Thanks for the pep talk!! I needed that for sure. I love Steemit and I am grateful for it and how it has led me into the Crypto World. I agree, I see Peace here in Steemit, we should all come together, be grateful and move on. The Year of Steemit. I enjoy your posts and your contests are always awesome! Happy New Year to you & your family...and all Steemians!
Thanks for that @clove71! I hope that this year will be full of blessings for you!
Well said. You have a good head on your shoulders Mr Papa. We all need encouragement from time to time. We usually get back more than we give in life. Nothing is free.
We all do need encouragement, and I'm not the least of those! Thanks @manorvillemike!
Overcoming Discouragement is one of the hurdles here in this platform, which affects most of the newcomers. Thank the Lord i have invited some of my friends and office mates to join Steemit. As i stated on one of my posts, quality and quantity can go a long way, but consistency and communication is the crucial points here in Steemit. They may see random nonsense posts with ludicrous amounts of upvotes, and in turn churning out an awesome length and good quality post gave them nil. So i advised them not to be disheartened but just still keep on making content.
All in all, i do not hold their fate. But i will always encourage anyone to press on and just keep on creating content, as long as they are enjoying what they are doing. :)
More power to you @papa-pepper and have a wonderful 2018! God bless you bro! ^u^
Very, very well said! God bless you too!
Brilliantly said.
I took a hiatus from steemit, partially because I needed to focus my attentions elsewhere at the time but also because it can be discouraging.
I'm not just referring to steemit either, all forms of social media carry the same problems.
Actually it was just yesterday I was talking with @stormriderstudio about how discouraged I was getting with social media in general as I was working to much on it for very little, let's say validation because reward is certainly the wrong word.
He said to me pretty much exactly what you have just put down in this post. Don't give up, keep trying, you have friends and you are good at what you do so don't let the numbers get you down.
So I jumped back in and do you know what, yesterday I had an amazing day I got out of all my platforms exactly what I put in and more.
Find your flow and keep at it.
Glad to hear it was a confirmation of good advice that you had already been given. Be blessed and keep at it.
Thanks for the pep talk! While I've never given up on Steemit, I've become really frustrated with it. My reaction has been to sit on the sidelines and wait it out. I feel like there's way too much fighting and drama going on and not enough energy going towards making things more usable and attractive to use. When I recommend this platform to others they always complain that the website design is bad, all the trending posts are insider talk, and they don't understand how to format posts.
I'm not a developer so I can't fix any of those things, though. Guess I need to reconsider my focus.
nice
Words of wisdom Papa! We are a community with family members we love like and not so much but in the end we're here for one another unless someone is just criminal. Building this individually means treating others as you want to be treated in my book. The don't incriminate one self goes without saying although some aren't mature mentally enough to understand this but they'll learn as we all do. Thanks so much for the encouragement!
Right, treat them as you would like to be treated. I think that is why so many people are nice to me. If I was a giant jerk to them, I'm pretty sure they'd hate me instead!
Well said.
As a minnow I think many times of leaving when my hard worked posts didn't get viewed and not read thoroughly. As a minnow It can be frustrating...
I think recent serge in steem prize and post payouts is very helpful to motivate newbies who were losing heart and thinking of leaving...
And totally agree with what you said about control...
Understanding what you can and what you can't control is important...It applies to both life and steemit!
I think the same way but will never quit.
Absolutely, both life and steemit! Thank you.
Nice post.
It is a very motivational post of @papa-pepper in which he not only encourage people to remain positive but also share his experience of work. Up and down is part of life. No one in the world who does not face failure in life. Those who consistently work hard with planning get success. @papa-pepper Thanks for this post
I really appreciate your encouragement! I think you have done well on Steemit because you are honest and real! Not to mention that you have such COOL posts! I love all your homesteading ideas! Your animal posts are so FUN too! I have learned a lot from you! Thank you so much!
People keep pointing out that "HONEST" and "REAL" part... I wish that didn't stick out as different. Thanks!
Well, I agree with you. I would like to believe that everyone who posts is honest and real.
Have a wonderful day!
Such a wonderful topic it motivited me i got postive power from this post
Thank you for the advice
You are welcome.
"NOTHING IS GUARANTEED, BUT YOU HAVE POTENTIAL"
Awesome quote bro - Steem On!
Steem on!
Winners never quit and quitters never win. @papa-pepper is a real winner and strong motivator of this great platform.
Thanks for that!
constructive advice thank you for sharing
I hope that it helps some people!
I am grateful to read this post. I love this part..
Glad it could help motivate!
Wish you new year 2018 is good for everyone
Same to you bro have a rocking year ahead
Me too!
Awesome Brother Thank You So much
You are welcome! STEEM ON!
this post is very great friend,
You can stop at #steemit, but you do not stop forever.
friends just rest until his energy recovered,
because I really need @papa-pepper here and forever.
Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions @papa-pepper. I once thought so. Sometimes I am lethargic or tired. But I never stopped, because steemit has become a part of my life. Almost all the time I left it here. But I'm always infected by every suggestion from you. Receive all your support @papa-pepper.
I am glad to help encourage! Keep it up my friend!
Yes I can feel your sincerity in pushing for our progress. I do not never feel saturated when finding your post that varies. Surely my passion is more passionate when you come. I can not do more than thank you for all the support.
Great pep talk @papa-pepper, starting to sound like wisdom is becoming a part of you ;-)
LOL! Thanks!
YW ;-)
I'm interest to read your post. Don't forget to visit my blog @papa-pepper
I agree with you @papa-pepper money can not guarantee everything
Thank you @papa-pepper for this motivational and encouraging post. Do have a happy 2k18.
Great advice man! I think consistency is key on Steemit. The price of Steem has gone up a lot, but it doesn't do us much good if we don't put in the time when it's low
Right, all that "cheap STEEM" suddenly becomes worth a lot more. Then, those who left when it was low have a harder time earning it when it is high, and actually missed the opportunity.
Exactly!
That is wonderful
this is great, thanks for your parting words of advice am greatful
A lot of thanks for this incredible and motivating post. Greetings and blessings!
Thank you for taking time to share this. I’m trying to make sense of this site, I’m reading so many different things, interesting things, but god knows how long it will take me to absorb it all, I’m new, and I’m no quitter, I just hope I’m a fast learner.
If you like watching videos, I do have an advice series I did a while ago. It has helped many others in times past.
Thanks, will watch xx
This is very impressive post. You have openly shared your experiences with us.Not most share their personal things or drawbacks with us.But you have.respect you for that. And for a beginner like me this is the best advise you can give.thank you very much.waiting to read more posts from you
I am very amazed at your friend your post is amazing and I learn a lot from your posts because I always follow your friends ..
yes people often get disappointed when their hardwork goes in vain. they don't get reward what they deserve. But it doesn't happen here only but also in every day life. there is a time when people become humdrum and lose hope eventually result a quitting steemit or suicide. you suggested an excellent suggesation. If you quit there is NO CHANCE that you will succeed. so hope for the best. your hardwork paid you either early or late. so just show patience. as patience is virtue.
That is an interesting thing too. Pretty much NO ONE else anywhere would reward us for what we've been up to on steemit. For the most part, we don't deserve to even have this option, and yet we do. Therefore, we should take advantage of this opportunity and remain optimistic.
Yes i agree. Same is applicable on steemit and real life. Very nice and optamistic post. The best thing i like on this amazing community is that people do motivational post which brings hope and positive energy.
I agree also that people can be disappointed because the content sometimes has no value but the power of vote (money) can change the way of our earnings.
Will have to read this tomorrow, but I appreciate that you took the time! Got babies today!
nice post. post design legendary :)
My 1st day 1st comment.I m so lucky to read this kind of motivational post as my 1st one.I will do my best to stay in this great community.
Thank you very much for the nice advise.I will rest if im tired but never i will quit.cheers
Cool, welcome to steemit!
It is always to good to see positive and encouraging posts on here. The other night I fell into a rabbit hole of reading on some bashing belonging to a few accounts on steemit. Very negative. I just shook my head and thought this is what people are writing about? I followed @mericanhomestead here from YT so I can learn and share experiences, not put people down.
Thank you @papa-pepper for another great post!

Well put. I too am not here to make things worse for others. Let's encourage, inspire, share, and create!
I totally agree with you sir... I have seen that kind of my friend whom I asked to join.. they made there account but never used it to post... Because they just quit because they think it is time consuming...
But they don't understand that this is a very good plateform to show their qualities to the whole world... And I was lucky that people welcomed me very well from their hearts.. and in middle of my time here yes I was busy for 2 months and didn't get time to post.. but yesterday I posted after a long time and people on steem welcomed me again very well. And now I think why would I quit... People need to understand this beautiful plateform.. it is a big opportunity..
A big opportunity for sure! Thanks @gulshannsaini!
Yes sir... People are enjoying it and trying to do better than others.. and you can see any contests... People organise it and lots of other steemers take participate in that..... I am enjoying it... 😊
I never thought of giving up but I have gotten lazy, I'm naturally a slacker and depressed about some of the issues here on steemit. Thankfully I've worked my way out of the little knots I make in my head.
Laziness can do it too. Normally I'm a slacker and a procrastinator.
You can not decide on steemit page in just one month.. use it one year, and you see it is work .
This was very inspiring and encouraging @papa-pepper and I thank you for that, it is really good to hear these words of encouragement from someone like you who I look up to and keep on learning from.
Since I started my journey here I have never felt like quitting since I really liked what I was doing and I knew it will take time to make friends and if I stick to it, it will pay off at the end.
It was discouraging many times, but I just kept on speaking from my heart in my posts and comments.
One thing that was really, really inspiring to me was the people like yourself and @canadian-coconut and @teamsteem and @markwhittam and so, so many more that just kept on inspiring me and made me feel proud to be part of this community.
Very cool! You've done well so far! Keep it up!
Thank you @papa-peper for the encouraging words.
