1. Listen to Motivational Speeches
We’ve all heard of listening to classical music or movie soundtracks, but listening to motivational speeches is another tool which I found really helpful during high school. Keeping these on in the background is a great way to maintain energy, feel less bored and create a powerful environment. This is one of my favorite playlists on Spotify containing speeches. However, for some people, listening to these tracks might act as more of a distraction than a help so proceed with caution.
2. Company, Company, Company
Studying alone can often be super boring. A lot of the time, having another person there can be a great comfort - even if you’re just studying in each other’s presence. You can either work together, for example, quizzing each other or you can just work near someone who is also working. During my HSC year, sometimes I couldn’t get to a library or a friend’s house, or it was simply late at night. In these cases, I would Skype a friend, and we would study together that way!
3. Ditch the Textbook
I found that a lot of the time, I would get bored reading a textbook hours upon hours. For me, it was helpful to use other sources of information to spice up my study. You could search for a video on youtube, some flashcards on Quizlet or a podcast on the topic.
4. Switch up your Environment
I found that changing the place where I was studying could really make studying seem more fun! See if you can get out to a library, cafe or local park for a good study sesh. If not, maybe go to a different room in your house or visit a friend. For the times when I couldn’t do any of these, lighting a candle and a quick clean of the room I was in made a world of difference.
5. Colour!
Highlighting, coloured pens, coloured pencils, crayons - all of these things can make the daunting task of making study notes a bit more fun! Of course, it’s not necessary to have pretty study notes, but for some people, it can definitely make the task more enjoyable.
What are some of your ways of spicing up study?
