Belle Madeleine
Source
Unbeknownst to Belle Madeleine, the marchioness wrote to the marquess one day:
“Your wife is a naughty girl. She runs after the gallants. She doesn't take care of your two daughters and makes them cry twenty times a day."
The marquess replied secretly to his mother:
“Mother, be patient. Take care of my two daughters. Take care of them well. The war will end. Expect that when I return, my naughty wife and her lovers will have a bad time."
But one day the marquess wrote:
“Mother, the war is over. In seven weeks I will be back at the castle."
Then the marchioness thought:
“Now is the right time to quarrel my son to death with his naughty wife."
With this thought, the marchioness called Belle Madeleine, her two daughters, and a valet who was not worth much money.
“Listen, slut. Listen to your husband's letter; you won't read it. Your husband writes to me: “My wife is a naughty girl. She runs after the gallants. Who proves to me that his two daughters are mine? Mother, make this scoundrel saw off both arms. Then throw her out, and her two bastards with her." — Valet, you heard. Obey."
La Belle Madeleine submitted like a saint. The servant saw off her arms, and his two daughters each picked up one. This done, all three left by the grace of God.
Finally, the marquess returned from the war.
“Hello, mother. Where is my wife? Where are my two daughters?"
"My son, your naughty wife has gone to wander the world with a gallant and his two bastards."
Then the marquess became sad, very sad. However, the poor man was wary. He tried to question the servants and valets of the castle. But no one dared to speak, for fear of the marchioness.
One spring day, the marquess was thinking at his window. He was sad, very sad. He was thinking of his two daughters. He was thinking of Belle Madeleine.
On the shutter, three pretty swallows sang their song.
— “Swallows, pretty swallows, tell me if my mother lied to me.
— Tiri tiri tiri. Marquis, your mother lied to you.
— Swallows, pretty swallows, tell me where my two daughters are. Tell me where my wife is. Tell me where Belle Madeleine is.
— Tiri tiri tiri. »
From the shutter, the three pretty swallows flew away, never to return, never.
Then the marquis went down to the stable, untied his big black horse, put the bridle and saddle on him, and set off at full gallop.
While all this was happening, Beautiful Madeleine was passing away by the grace of God. She was going with her two daughters, carrying their poor mother's two arms. Fortunately, the good people took pity on them, and never refused them alms.
The three of them walked like this for a long, long time. One evening, they arrived at the edge of a river.
At the edge of the river, three old poor people were saying to each other:
“How will we manage to cross the river?"
"Poor people, said Belle Madeleine, I am strong. Get on my back. I will pass you in turn."
Belle Madeleine took one of the three old poor people on her back and carried him across the water.
“Thank you, Belle Madeleine. Did you find me very heavy to carry?"
"Poor thing, I found you heavier to carry than I can say."
"Belle Madeleine, I am Saint John. Your charity will be repaid to you."
Belle Madeleine went back to get another poor old man and carried him across the water.
“Thank you, Belle Madeleine. Did you find me very heavy to carry?"
—"Poor thing, I found you less heavy to carry than your companion."
"Belle Madeleine, I am Saint Peter. Your charity will be repaid to you."
Belle Madeleine returned to fetch the last of the three old poor people and carried him to the other side of the water.
“Thank you, Belle Madeleine. Did you find me very heavy to carry?"
"Poor thing, I found you lighter to carry than I can say."
"Belle Madeleine, I am the Good Lord. Your charity will be repaid to you. Now go get your two daughters."
Belle Madeleine obeys.
Then the Good Lord said to the two girls:
“Give me your mother’s arms."
In an instant, both arms were attached to the body.

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.
I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.
The marchioness was not sure that her son would believe her if his wife and daughters were in the castle when he returned from the war. That is why she got rid of them before the return of her son.
Belle Madeleine is lucky to meet Saint John, Saint Peter, and the Good Lord: she got back her two arms!
As we are leaving Hungary and returning to Canada today, we winterized the vineyard house. Mostly we need to make sure that there will be no freezing water that would break some equipment.
Also, Kati trimmed the "French plant" that was still full of red flowers.
We then left the vineyard house around three in the afternoon and went to Kati's mother's house. The children and grandchildren of Kati had left today early in the morning.
Tomorrow, the shuttle that will bring us to Budapest airport will arrive at 5:20 in the morning!
It will take us almost 20 hours door to door from Pécs to Calgary in Alberta. We will be very tired, but because of the jetlag, we will not sleep well during the night, unfortunately.
Tomorrow's post will be delayed.

I can't understand what the Marchioness really want, does she not want her son to be happily married or does she not want her son to have heirs. Her greedy and evil Nature made her plot this evil against an innocent woman, a woman who submitted herself wholeheartedly to her rule like she was a servant. My heart reaches out to Belle Madeleine, for all she had to go through, just because of a wicked mother-in-law.
She cut off her arms after accusing her falsely of committing adultery and then banished her and her twin daughters from that City.
I pray her evil will catch up with her someday.
The Marquess is partly responsible for what happened because he gave his Mom so much powers with which the Marchioness subjected Belle Madeleine to gross inhumanity. But the Saints and the Lord Almighty helped her and restored her arms. I'm so eager to know how the Marchioness got paid back in her own coin.
Wow! You are from Canada, a country I would love to be in, one day. I pray God grants you safe passage home.
wow. how bad everything that happened to Belle Madeleine, with her mother in law, there are definitely some mothers in law that are not to be trusted, she got the worst one. But as they say when they do things right, good things happen, she unknowingly did good and what she got back was a miracle.
The good thing is that you will return to your home sweet home.
I hope the trip doesn't become tiresome even though you are saying it, I wish the whole trip will be a happy one for both of you.
The Marchioness once again proves her wicked nature by slandering her daughter in law to her husband, the Marquess. As if that wasn't enough she hatches a most wicked plan to decieve her daughter in law and saw off both her arms sending her and her two daughters to wander abroad. But the kind nature of Belle Madeleine makes her help the two saints and The Good Lord who restores her arms. This is certainly the beginning of the salvation of Belle Madeleine and also the beginning of the just judgment of the wicked Marchioness. No doubt the two saints and the Good Lord will help avenge Belle Madeleine of her wicked mother in law. And also help bring the Marquess, his wife and daughters together. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Thanks for this interesting story.
Indeed you spent a pleasant time together with your family at your home in Hungary and now it's time to make it back to Canada. As the preparations for your journey goes on, I wish you all a very safe trip. Kati did a good job on the French Plant. It's a good thing to have your present home in good condition before your trip back to Canada.
May the Angels of the Good Lord lead you all safely back home. Goodbye and God bless @vcelier.
This is wickedness of the highest order! Ah! I just couldn't believe that the Marchioness could go to this length of lying against Belle Madeleine, just to get rid of her and her children. She knew that once the Marquess returned home, she won't be able to carry out her nefarious acts.
But there's a God in heaven and I'm so happy that because of her good deeds, Belle Madeleine got her arms back.
Oh back to Canada, Katie's Mom would really miss her family, I hope she won't be too lonely.
Interesting part of the story. His mother is a liar how could a mother do such a bad thing to her son?? That's not fair . I hope her son know the truth as early as possible and found his wife and daughters. I m hoping that he could be a strong wise man and think from his own mind and listen to his own heart than he could do a best decision. Hope soo his mother chapter will be ended with something that she deserve I don't like her character. His wife and daughters are safe now due to her own kindness and care for other people her good deeds be rewarded soon .
Wow nice to hear about your plan of the coming days. Have a safe journey to Canada
Ahhh! Did I just hear "she made your daughters cry 20 times a day"? What a lie. That marchioness of a woman is evil, imagine what she has been cooking for a over 7 years. And to crown it all, she couldn't wait for her son to return before sending the wife packing because she knew that her son will barely believe her if the wife is around. Kai! Poor Belle Madeleine, I really feel for her. And just look how obedient she was. But what I don't understand is the marchioness evil act, I mean what exactly will gain doing all this evil to her own son? Well, at least I am glad that Belle Madeleine met those three people by the riverside and she even helped them of which they all promised to help her back, at least that alone has given me relieve.
Oh! 20 hours is pretty much. We will wait for tomorrow's post whenever it comes, what matters is that you get enough rest once you are settled.
The Marchioness is a heartless woman. I can't just imagine a mother being this wick to her son's wife, up to the extent of blackmailing her to the Marquess her husband and telling lies that his wife is a naughty girl, She runs after the gallants, She doesn't take care of your two daughters and makes them cry twenty times a day. As If that wasn't enough for her, she went forward and lied that the Marquess wrote a letter and asked the servant to saw off her arms and chase her and her two bastards away, which they actually did. This is called wickedness of the highest order.
Belle Madeleine was a God-fearing woman and God came to her rescue because she was innocent of all the Judges laid against her. She was lucky to meet Saint John, Saint Peter and the Good Lord, that was how she got her arms back.
I wish you guys a safe trip back to Canada, you did well by coming to spend time with family and friends. Also, you people well by trying to put things in place before living.
If we compare this with today's time, the story still hasn't changed, the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law have a fight here and Sans keeps inciting her son that she is your Begum. She doesn't care about your children, she spends all her time like this, and in this story, we see all the things happening there, but I would like to say one thing here that a mother can never do that to her children. The children are crying and he should not take care of them because in this world no other human being can show the love of a mother. We can also understand that no one in the world can love us more than a mother's love. The way he has given a sensible answer and said that now mother take care of my daughters, I will look at all things once again, so this thing is good, it is his duty to take care of them both, his wife. And his mother's too.
Canada is also my favorite country and I will definitely go there one day and shift there because human rights are respected there. I have also heard that it is very cold there and the water turns to ice.
Flowers are looking very pretty and still gives fresh feeling inspite of winters cold winds.
If we talk about the story, I am very angry about the act of cruel mother in law. Why she was not thinking that she has brought this girl for her beloved son and has to be accepted the reality.
Daughter in law should be treated equally with mother in law as she is also an owner of the house.
She can also give orders why her husband do not willing to this fact and act blindly on the orders of his mother.
His mother broken her arms and let her left the house in order to make her statement true that she is deceiving her husband.
I think her husband should trust his wife and do not believe his mother statement.
Now he is packing his luggage and I think he will gone in search of his family.
Very intriguing story!
It seems that the Marquise was worried about her son's reaction to finding his wife and daughters in the castle after the war.
What an unfortunate decision to dispose of them like that.
On the other hand, I'm glad Bella Magdalena was lucky enough to find St. John, St. Peter and the Good Lord, and to have regained both her arms.
Life can be amazing sometimes.

It must have really caught her with shocked and been difficult for her to actually resist, I understand the position she was into. I believe the mother was just been bothered about the behaviour of his wife and the state mentally that will affect the daughter. But it seems the man was not seeing it from that angle and decided to just push all the responsibility which his wife should carry out upon his mother head. That's bad for him to do though, well thank God he has an understanding mother also because that really matters.
As the story flow, I begin to realise the wife might not really be naughty as the mother claim, probably the mother didn't love the wife and also the children from the wife and so resulted to that much hatred and dislike for her. This happens in some homes where mother's have issues with the wife of their son.
Ahhh yes, only the French can make nasty things appropriate. However, Belle Madeleine's endurance in the face of immense suffering reflects themes of resilience and the human capacity to withstand adversity. The removal of her arms is a metaphor for the physical and emotional toll that cruelty can take on an individual. Sometimes we can be baffled by how much our body and mind can withstand
At this stage of the story we can see that in a heartbreaking turn of events, Belle Madeleine, falsely accused by the deceitful marchioness, endures unspeakable suffering and separation from her daughters. This pushes her only to be redeemed by her unwavering kindness when she encounters three old poor people at the river, revealing the miraculous intervention of Saint John, Saint Peter, and the Good Lord in restoring her severed arms and reuniting the family. This proves that it is better in life to be generous, rather than keep everything for ourselves, whether material or imaterial.
