King Samuel, burning with a look
Bulgarian architects are great inventors!
For example, Sofia is full of the most incredible sculptures, the significance of which can not be guessed - you can only read on the plate. But there are those that at first glance seem completely banal. However, it is not)
Sculpture of King Samuel "burns" the evening walkers with his eyes. In the eye of the monument are inserted elements that concentrate sunlight during the day and emit it at night. This moment is very offensive to the urban intelligentsia of the old school.
Briefly the essence of the conflict
The monument to Tsar Samuel was staged in 2014. It is said that the head of this sculpture is absolutely identical to the original, because it is made on the cast of a skull belonging to King Samuel.
Samuel is a Bulgarian king, whose army fought against the Byzantine army of Tsar Vasily, and was defeated. Tsar Vasily took the Bulgarian army into captivity and gouged out his eyes to all the soldiers, except for every hundredth. And sent them home. Legend has it that at the sight of his blinded warriors, King Samuel died of a heart rupture.
So, according to the architect's idea, the glowing look of this sculpture should symbolize something.
Curious nuance: the king here is not just so - opposite him is a sculptural group of those most blinded samuel warriors, the work of another author. Only it was set here in the days of socialism. And here the old-school intellectuals consider the old group of "Samuilo voynitsi" a good sculpture, and the new one - "Tsar Samuil" - is a bad one. They think that such kitsch as luminous eyes should offend the feelings of all citizens in the country.
These are the blinded warriors from the "back". I deliberately took them off so that I could be seen standing in front of King Samuel. I hope that you will see it too.
Thank you for your time and attention.
