Dealing with our Emotions - Short Story / Lesson

You wake up dazed on in a cold damp darkness; the only noise you can hear is your breath, which is gasping for air. You instinctively put your hands around your neck hoping to open your lungs and realize there’s something around your head. You rip and tear at the cloth to free yourself but it’s not coming off. You stop, still frantic, take a shallow breath to calm your heart while you try to find out how to remove this.. bag? Both hands are searching for freedom. Your left hand happens to come across a string, you reach your right hand over quickly and follow the string down to a clasp, pulling the clasp up the string a little ways. You quickly let go and tear at the bag to remove it, you catch a fresh gasp of oxygen as you do but are unsuccessful. You find the clasp again and loosen it all of the way this time. You feel better with that breath of air and have now become cautions as to what’s outside of this bag as you slowly lift it off of your head.
You spin around backwards quickly to see if anyone is behind you but you’re all alone in a tunnel. All you can see is a very dim light coming from the East amongst the dirt and litter.

This may seem like a simple story, a person is trapped, they get free and saw a light. Those are the natural conclusions we’re taught to draw. A Summary. But in fact, all of the little details Do Matter. The emotion that was felt during each obstacle (Struggle to breath, removing object from their head, trying to find a way to loosen the bag, the failed attempt to loosen the bag, the fear that came once the bag was loose).

Discarding our Emotions

So, why in real life do we try to summarize so quickly? Why, when the task is done…do we try to forget the emotion that was so very apparent? Could it be that we don’t enjoy feeling weak? But, since it happened already..doesn’t that make you weak already?

The point here is to try and embrace your emotions instead of rushing past them. There are so many mistakes we’ve made again and again because we choose to ignore the emotion we were feeling…or we focus of others feelings (emotions) over our own. Whether someone laughs at you, looks at you funny or gets upset with you. You should still acknowledge why your emotions happened to feel confident in having control that next time won’t be the same.
