I need help choosing the name of a fictional religion for my novel. I had previously chosen Kabalism, because the leaders of the religion are somewhat of a Kabal,. However, I have since realised that Kabalism is already a thing. I'm not sure if knew that already and had simply forgotten. Either way, I need a new name and my mind is failing to come up with something. If anyone can suggest something good I will give them a Steem dollar. It's not much but, I don't have much on here yet.
A little background on the religion.
Kabalism is one of the most Ancient religions in the known universe. The religion is largely built on secrecy, with only the Kabali themselves being permitted to read the sacred tablets. It is forbidden to transcribe the tablets, and the punishment for attempting to do so is death. There are 12 known tablets, dispersed around the world, held by 12 noble families. These families are said to have blood ties going back to the dawn of their religion, when their God walked among them.
At age 12, Kabali children embark on a year long journey known as "The Great Feast, " symbolic of the huge amount of knowledge they are expected to digest over the 12 months. During the Great Feast, the child, accompanied by a fellow Kabali, will travel to the home of each of the 12 noble families. They will spend a few weeks at each one, receiving an education on the origins of their religion, as well as having the opportunity to see each of the tablets. The sacred tablets are said to be made of granite and range in size from 10x10 to 50x100 feet.
Little else about the religion is known by those outside of it but, some have reported that children are never the same once they return from their "feast," and some, never return at all.
The Kabali are a close-knit community and known to help each other when needed. They also occupy a large amount of positions of power all over Atalas, except in the most Eastern continent, Amanak, where they hold only one position of power.
That should be able to assist in thinking of a name, though it hasn't helped me. There is a lot more that I could say about the religion, but because I intend to post the novel on here, I don't want to spoil anything.
Any help is much appreciated.
Dodecanism - inspired in the greek word for 12, due to the amount of references to that number
Well, spoiler alert- There is a thirteenth tablet. lol. What's the word for that?
Now you got me, didn't expect that XD
I think thirteen is decatria or something like that.
Arcathras, combination between Arcane and Mithras. Arcathri in reference to the people. Ending in ism sounds too modern and of this current world.
or is your book a satire in disguise?
edit: maybe Arcathri is too close to dothraki. Arcathe?
Very interesting. You're right though, that one is a little close to Dothraki. I can still combine your two words to make Arcanethra, which I really like the sound of. Thanks a lot. I'll send you that reward shortly.
keep writing about them until the name comes to you/
I have written a lot more about them already, to the point where whenever I think of them I hear Kabali in my head.. It's gonna be difficult for me to shake that name now.
What you wrote reminds me of the cults of Mithras
How about Nehmaira. Not sure if you wanted an "ism." Nemarism? Playing with the spelling...Thinking of existing religions, not all are isms...christianity, islam...hmmm..actually those are the only two that come to mind that aren't isms., but still. Good Luck!
Is that a tribute to the Brazilian football player? Lol.
Ha, no...I didn't even know what you were talking about till I googled it.
how about Xianism.
the word for 13 is triskadeca, also known as a bakers dozen. this is, in almost every aspect, judaism. 12 tribes, tablets of the law secreted in the holiest of holys. your tablets indicate god was a giant, in judaism, giants once walked the earth and man once walked with god. anyone entering the chamber containing the law, that is not worthy, dies. it is a close knit community that hold many positions of power all over the world, except in the eastern continent, i don't think there are many chinese jews. the great feast is the jubilee. every 7 years all debt is forgiven. all that is missing is the religion spawned by the fulfillment of the prophecies of the tablets of law, and the religion of barbarism that threatens to destroy all that has been built.
I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing that you put that together, because the religion is loosely based on Judaism. That is why Xianism is perhaps a little too obvious, as it sounds exactly like Zionism. Thanks a lot for the suggestion though.
how about Sufarianism, Enkinism, or Bintianism?
i am a student of archetype. i was kind of joking with xianism but then your name is son-of-satire. you may find some ideas in books by joseph campbell. he wrote extensively about archetype and ritual. the early part of the judaism story appears to be a retelling of some of the oldest sumerian stories. there is some screwiness having to do with the ages reached by the people in the stories but the sumerians did use a base 60 numbering system.
Thank you for the suggestions. They are good ones. However, I already went with a derivative of a suggestion that someone else made and sent them a reward for it. I will need to research the origins of this religion though, because I don't want it to be too close to the real thing.
if i can help, let me know. i know quite a bit about religions. would we have any hope of seeing excerpts from the story here on steemit?
Of course. I have decided that I'm going to post each chapter on steemit.
However, this is my first time writing a novel and as I have had no education on how to do so, I approached it my own way. As a result of this, I have ended up doing it somewhat backwards, with most of the writing I have already done, taking place towards the end of the story. I know now that it is likely to be at least three novels, because there is so many subplots going on that there is no way I could complete the story in one novel alone. I am aiming to make it no more than four, if possible. This is because I want the prologue for each book to describe four different people's point of view of the same day's events. Each time, revealing new information about the truth of what led to said events.
I am working on revising the first prologue at this very moment, adding foreshadowing for events that I know will take place further down the line. I expect it will be finished by tomorrow at the latest so I will have the prologue for the first novel posted probably tomorrow evening. It may have to be uploaded as an untitled novel at this point, because I have been having difficulty coming up with a worthy name. This is a very rich story and I want the title to do it justice. After I have uploaded a fair few chapters, perhaps I will ask for help from my readers once again. This certainly produced some good results.
As for your offer to assist in regards to theological attributes to the story, I may just have to take you up on that. I have the religions for Amanak taken care of but, I will need a few more for the Western continents before long. Thanks again for the suggestions.
dude, you probably already came up with a name..but i bet i could come up with something legittt lol.
I did, but it's not too late to change it to something better. I'm still not entirely satisfied with the current one.
awesome, well I will start thinking of something.
Hey I got tons of ideas for good books but im not really a writter..
If I were to tell you some of my ideas, and if you liked one would you write a book about it? lol. cause ive got some ideas that i could actually see being movies if only someone were to write them..hah.
