Except that fun should never be illegal.
Yeah, so we really don't celebrate "Easter" or believe in any egg-laying rabbits, whether seasonal or not. Therefore, if we want to have an egg hunt, we just turn a chicken loose for a while and then track down where it went off to. Today was the day, and the @little-peppers won the game!
THE HUNT IS ON... AND COMPLETELY LEGAL
This is the chicken that the @little-peppers played against. She's a beautiful Barred Rock hen that has been on the loose for about three weeks. Pinkie-Pepper got this hen for her birthday, and we thought that she'd make a good opponent.
After a while of searching, the @little-peppers caught a glimpse of something under our neighbors porch. Sure enough, they had located the nest full of eggs, but they still had to figure out how to get them.
Interestingly enough, a hole in the lattice was located, and soon the @little-peppers were developing a plan. This hole was obviously big enough for a chicken to fit through, but could the @little-peppers?
Not wanting to lose the egg hunt game on a technicality, Monster Truck tried the hole on for size. Sure enough, it worked. Either he is the size of a chicken, or the hole is even bigger than a chicken.
Pinkie-Pepper went next. She wasn't going to miss out on the glory. She was in it for the win. No egg hiding chicken was going to get the best of her!
After some crawling and squirming, the @little-peppers were in position. They had not only located the nest, but now they also had eggs in hand. Unlike the pretend eggs that other children search for in the spring, these are full of yolks and whites, and not candy, so the @little-peppers had to be careful.
Soon they were passing the eggs out of their "under-porch cage" and out into the open. Who would be able to assist them in their efforts?
Yeah, @papa-pepper tried to be a good and helpful papa, so he was ready with the assist. We raided that nest like crazy and returned the loose hen back to the general population. Now she can marry a nice rooster and lay some real eggs to sit on.
with the help of @papa-pepper of course. The Barred Rock was returned to her flock, and soon perhaps she will hatch out some little chicks for us. It was a lot of work just to get some eggs for breakfast, but it was also a lot of fun. Hope that you enjoyed the story! In the end, we got a good pile of eggs and the @little-peppers won the great egg hunt game,
here's the proof:As always, I'm @papa-pepper and

The operative word is "fun". One person's or kid's fun rarely seems to be that of another unless it is on a farm. Farm fun seems to universally be accepted as fun by almost everyone. I find the chicken tracking skills I gained as a kid have come in SUPREMELY handy later in life now that I raise them and they like to occasionally escape.
Also there is little as sneaky and driven as a hen who is looking for a spot to lay an egg. Although if I had that hard lump screaming to get out of me I would be pretty driven too!
LOL - Good point!
Hope the neighbor got some eggs to. :-)
amazing @papa-pepper. @marcosteem strongly agree what @ papa-pepper talks about how to take a chicken egg. ok @papa-pepper I am your fan with your post which is always appreciated by many people @papa-pepper therefore i really like @papa-pepper, @papa.maya and big family @papa-pepper. Okay if @papa-pepper there's a little free time give me some support for me @papa-pepper.
Couldn't imagine who you are referring to....I'm guessing @papa-pepper? ;)
Now, this egg hunt is a lot more fun than looking for fake eggs! And the @little-peppers get to eat them for breakfast!
"Non cage free children" 😂😂
Yeah, you caught that, huh?
Made me chuckle😊
Was the hen not broody? Could have increased the size of your flock?
She's been away from the roosters for quite some time now... plus there is a fox on the loose.
this is a great pile of eggs, but why do you take it, why not get it in the dark.
better this in made child, so the result will quickly increase.
Hope they hadn't been under the porch too long, or you might get more than yolks in the middle.
Good point!
That's awesome. You can spin a good story. The little-peppers look like they have a lot of fun, and get work done at the same time. How did you come up with Monster-Truck? My son was always like having a bull in a china shop. (really he still is at 22y.o....)
Monster Truck the Eagle was the name that he had come up with for his first rooster, so when we created the @little-peppers account, we called him Monster Truck the Pepper. Here is an old story about that rooster.
https://steemit.com/life/@papa-pepper/the-return-of-monster-truck-the-eagle
That's awesome, It seems to suite him.
That's a great story. As I was reading it I just kept thinking that you could probably turn it into a children's book. That being said, I really enjoyed reading it, so maybe it could sell to adults too. ;)
Based on what I know of you, I didn't figure that you would be into that sort of thing. Personally, I think Easter is a great time to remember Jesus, regardless of whether or not that was the actual day He rose.
I also like "Easter" but I always eat too much candy and I've been trying to eat less sugar, so it's a challenging day for me. Ha ha.
Hilarious!
Hahaha! Hilarious!
All our chickens free range, but USUALLY they lay in the chicken house. Occasionally, however, they DO decide to run amok and lay eggs willy nilly in weird places. My kids are pretty good at finding the nests though, and once we take the eggs from the illegitimate nest, they decide that place is not safe anymore, and find a new place to hide them...
We also get eggs under our house, and I have NO CLUE how this happens. Our foundation is made from cinderblocks. There are vents, but they are all firmly in place and super small holes, tiny slits, so no way for a hen to get in there. There is a crawl space door also, a small thing, and it is also firmly screwed shut with no way in, no gaps.
Somehow though, every time my husband goes under there to fix or check something, sure enough, he finds a nest of eggs!
I think my hens can teleport...
