This is the story of my first date and my first kiss!
I hadn't dated anyone until I was 16. Most of the girls in my school had started dating since they were 12, but although I kind of liked a boy in my class at that age, I never actually dated. I was way too shy for that!
By the age of 14 a girl from my class wanted to set me up with a guy who apparently fancied me, but I thought all boys in my school were immature and gross. I already had an idealized notion of the perfect boyfriend in my mind, a mature, romantic boy who would hold hands and walk on the beach with me. I actually convinced my younger cousin Janna that this imaginary guy was real and I was dating him, so as to appear more "grown up"!
At the age of 16, we had a gymnastics activity with a group of students from a foreign school, who came for an exchange program. We had to perform some kind of acrobatics, and we were asked to hold hands with each other. I'm pretty sure this exercise was done to promote tolerance and fight racism, but when this one guy held my hand, I felt an electric spark going through my body. It was an amazing warm feeling I had never experienced before. I was suddenly very, very into him. After the class I actually stayed longer so that I could talk to him one more time, but then I really had to leave.
I couldn't concentrate on anything else during that day. I knew I had to see him again. But where could I find him?? I called up my two girlfriends and told them that I had to find this guy. We actually went around town all day looking for his group. It was an exchange group, so they would most likely do what tourists do. We went to the most touristy area of our town, but still couldn't find them.
We finally gave up and decided to get an ice cream instead. And then as we entered... guess who just came out of the ice cream shop!! It was him and some of his group friends. I specifically told my friends not to mention to anyone that I liked him, it would ruin everything! But one of my friends, who happened to speak the boy's language told him that I liked him in their language! She set us up on a date and I didn't even now about it! We walked with them to their hotel and he wrote on a hotel card his room number so that I could call him and gave it to me. Did he like me back? Was it possible??
The next day they had a school activity. Two days later, in the morning, was our date. I got up early and prepared myself. I was extremely nervous when I met him. We walked up and down the beach for a while, and I found him so attractive that at some point I just instinctively grabbed him and kissed him! Yes, I kissed him first! I then realized what I had done and just froze. Thankfully, he grabbed me and kissed me back! We kept on kissing for a long long time! His group caught up with us at some point and they were laughing at us and even took some pictures of us together, as if we were already in a relationship!
Only that... he had to leave the next day. Before he left my island, I gave him a metallic heart necklace that had "I love you" written in my language on one side and in English on the other. I have no clue where I'd gotten it, but I'd had it for a long time, and I had decided to give it to the boy who would steal my heart. I wrote down my mobile phone number so that he could call me, as he didn't have a mobile phone.
When he went back to his country, he tried to call me three times in two days but it was during a time that I was busy and I missed all three, and there was no way to call him back as the number was foreign and did not appear on the screen. I actually went to the telephone services and they said there was no way to track an unknown caller ID down and even if there was, it would be illegal without a police warrant. I waited for him to call me for a whole year and never dated another guy. But he had given up. A year later, I changed my number because it was just too heartbreaking to wait for a phone call that would never come. My phone number was deactivated and I never heard from him again.
I was aware that this was just a physical attraction and that I didn't know anything about him as a person as we could barely even communicate in English. But he always remained in my heart as my first date and my first kiss at the age of sweet 16!
