When the battle was over, Rephael looked over the corpses as they prepared to leave the junction of universes and Rephael had an idea. He wondered why he could only go out in 1856 or so but not say to a few minutes before the battle or even before the whole thing, his life began.

It was like there were only a limited number of timelines, or at least a limited number he could access when, why couldn’t he just step into time somewhere and get the whole thing right?

His mother and father had moved in and out of time. Momma was in a time before she was born somehow yet he had never been into a time from before he was born nor could he find a gate to it, yet it should be there or here. It was so hard to think about but the facts were that as far as he knew, Momma was the only one who had traveled back in time to before she was born.

Think of all the lives that would be saved if…somehow the vortexes enabled the time travel, or a vortex that was fed a tremendous amount of energy.

“Are we ready to go?” One of the three surviving others, Captain Forrest asked.

“Just a moment, I am thinking about all this, have any of you heard a voice talking to you in here?” Rephael asked.

“What do you mean a voice?” The other captains Shrock, Forrest, and Lennox each asked in one form or another and then waited for his response.

“Something is really bothering me. I heard a voice out of nowhere in here, always thought it was God but what if it is not. Then who is it?” Rephael stated.

“No, I haven’t heard anything like that.” Each captain responded in various ways and Shrock said, “Why?”

“Do you think that something could have slipped out when we threw Asmodeus in while he and the other two tried to hold the gate?”

“If something did, it would have to be invisible…” Forrest speculated.

“It would be from hell…” Lennox looked around uncertainly.

“Are you certain you were not imagining this Weeks?” Shrock looked incredulous, “That was one hard battle, a score of us were killed and you were unconscious for at least a half hour. You could have been fatigued.”

“It could be but I don’t think so, it was after I let my family out, Dad and Holk, on the way back. I was told, ‘I have more tasks for you to do.’” Rephael replied then asked, “Did any of you hear anything?”

They all shook their heads, “No.”

“But you were a long way down there. We could not see you and we were busy gathering everything.” Forrest said.

“Not paying any attention to anything else, picking up the dead is tough work.” Lennox offered.

“I thought this battle was won and over are you saying there is something more to worry about?” Shrock began to be concerned.

“Before we leave, just to make certain we do not let something worse into the world than Asmodeus, everyone spread out in a different direction and keep your eyes and ears open, and before we do explore, is there any ammo left that we can share out to restock?” Rephael said.

“I think we should pair. This place is weird. No, weird does not describe it. We should search in pairs so someone does not imagine they heard something when both will hear. Weeks, you could have heard us talking and thought you heard what we said instead of what we actually said.” Schrock suggested but it was obvious disbelief returned.

“We have about two hundred rounds so, that would be fifty apiece.” Lennox observed.

“Were you talking?” Rephael asked.

“We talked some of course we thought the battle was over.” Schrock answered.

“But did any of you say, ‘I have some more tasks for you to do.’?” Rephael asked.

The three captains, Schrock, Lennox, and Forrest shrugged their shoulders and didn’t remember if they said something like that.

“Everyone get their share of ammo.” Rephael said, “And you are right I could have heard you and thought it was something else talking, so we pair up for witnessing and protection. I am going back the way I came who is with me.”

“I am.” Forrest volunteered.

“Forrest? Good. Shrock and Lennox head that way back toward the Hell Gate and we meet back here in 10 minutes?” Rephael suggested.

“Sounds good,” The other two nodded and walked off. Rephael and Forrest headed in the opposite direction.
