The Voice

"Take the left card!" the shrill voice commanded Henry. He turned around but there was no one behind him. The whole room was filled with cigarette smoke and loud music but he could have sworn someone just whispered to him. He looked around the dim room and on his fellow gambling mates who all have that expressionless faces every hardened gambler usually owns. He was about to give in to it as just a figment of his overworked imagination and the voice came on again more clearly into his ear and more insistent than before. "Take the goddamed left card!".

Henry had always being an unlucky man. He lost his first job that paid handsomely. His girlfriend left him for a more successful man who happened to be his long sworn enemy. And due to a series of other unfortunate events he was in this bar trying his luck in gambling. He is down to the last money on him. But like every bad gambler, he continued gambling hoping the next one will be the big break. He obeyed the voice and won the first game of the night. He was elated. So happy Henry decided to increase the stake on the next round of gambling. When it was his turn to pick the winning card he was expecting to hear the voice that just helped him. True to his expectation, it came and he won again.

This continued all through the night and he ended up winning a tremendous amount of money. Deep down in his thoughts he was thinking of how he will pay off his debts. Pay the landlord, who he has been avoiding the past one month because of money he owed in rent. He was on the last game and decided to put all the money he has won that night for the biggest stake of all. The voice instructed him to pick the left card again. He did and when the winning hand was declared it was the right card that won. The voice said, "Damn!". He has lost everything and that was the last time he heard from the voice again.
