Fue construido en el siglo XVII para proteger al puerto de Pampatar del ataque de piratas y corsarios. Durante mucho tiempo fue la construcción militar más sofisticada de la isla y actualmente es una de las mejores conservadas de la época colonial.
Su estructura base dibuja una forma de estrella y contiene elementos característicos de fortalezas de este tipo como puentes levadizos, patio de cañones y hasta una fosa que rodea todo el fuerte. Anualmente cientos de personas visitan este castillo que definitivamente es un valioso patrimonio histórico y un curioso atractivo turístico. Si viene a Margarita, no deje de visitarlo.
