The New Year’s Eve Celebration That Never Was. (It Finally Happened To Me!)

in #story2 years ago (edited)

We had all the plans for our New Year’s Eve sorted a week before the big night. A few fancy cheeses that we had to practically elbow other shoppers for in our local grocery store, garlic stuffed green olives (my favorite), jams, slightly stale Christmas cookies, a fine selection of bougie crackers, and those little oily Spanish almonds. Oh, and wine, lots of wine.

We were going to ring out the interesting year that was 2022 with our son and my wife’s sister. Our intention was to have a nice evening in at home with movies. As it turns out, fate had other plans.

During Christmas dinner with the in-laws we noticed a couple of them had the sniffles. We thought nothing of it. Our guards weren’t down, per say, but you could say that we’ve relaxed them considerably since peak pandemic times.

In the ensuing days the dominos started to fall. My sister-in-law, who’s visiting from Arizona, was the first to test positive for Covid midweek last. Then my son, a day later. I started exhibiting symptoms (a hangover-like headache, chills, sensitive skin) towards the end of last week and finally developed a fever and tested positive on Saturday, a week after exposure.

Thankfully, so far, my wife hasn’t developed any symptoms at all.

I’m on my third full day with the sniffles and, although quite a bit less severe than previous variants, even the Omicron variant of this virus is no joke. It's less severe than the worse flu I've had but far more potent than a head cold. At various points I’ve felt like -- my eyeballs were on fire and had shards of glass behind them, my heart was going to beat out of my chest, achy joints, and the oddest…strange and quite intense twinges of pain in random places throughout my body, last but not least a really persistent dry cough that kept me up all night.

The best part about this is 2023 can only get better from here, that's God's honest truth. We’re planning on having a NYE 2.0 celebration at some point in January after we’re all in the clear.

During these past few days of my Covid journey I’ve found a few things that really help:

  • Grapeseed oil nasal spray: This is supposed to have the potential of lessening symptoms and shortening the duration of the virus, various studies show it can protect you for contracting the virus if you’ve been exposed since Covid often incubates in the nasal cavity. It’s helped me tremendously and will be my new companion while traveling.

  • Delsym 12hr Cough Medication. I owe a decent night’s sleep to this magical over-the-counter orange syrup. My cough kept me up all night that first night after testing positive but after taking a dose of Delsym the second night I was able to sleep ten straight blissful hours.

  • Roasted Dandelion and Ginger Teas. Both of these teas, from Traditional Medicinals, are powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. I’ve been having a cup of each every day, sweetened with local honey, and topped off with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for the vitamin C.

  • Epsom Salt Soak. I discovered this one last night. Just before bed I soaked for fifteen minutes in a hot bath with a full cup of Epsom salt dissolved into the water. This worked wonders on the body aches and relaxed me enough to quickly drift off to sleep. Epsom salt is high in magnesium, a natural relaxant and pain reliever. I'll be doing this the next few nights, for sure.

  • A dram of whiskey on ice. I don't know how much this actually helps but it makes me feel a whole lot better.

This is my third full day after testing positive and I’m beginning to feel a little better with each hour that passes. The hardest part of this all for me is not being active. I sit here thinking of all the things I could be doing if I weren’t locked away in quarantine. Then, I think about how lucky I am to have such an easy go of this. So many people didn’t survive this virus or have permanent limitations because of it.

Amstel sure does seem to be missing his Papa for walks, playing, and meal time. Here he is pestering me yesterday for his dinner. I had to explain to him that Mom is the temporary sous chef for the next few days and he was barking up the wrong tree.

All for now. Trust your instincts, invest in you, live boldly, and take chances.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Happy new year to you and your family. Sad to know your son and other family members corona test positive. I pray for all of you that you all get well soon. A few months ago, a relative of ours also had Corona positive, so he was isolated for a 14 days and after that his test negative.

Thank you, we appreciate that! This new variant that circulating in the US is much more contagious but isn't as lengthy. I had three bad days and now I'm feeling a bit better every day.

Conditions in China are deteriorating again and it is heard that they are also starting to lockdown. And the virus is spreading again in the US as well. We pray that God protects us all from this. Good to hear that your health is improving now.

Yes, we're hearing about that here too. It's definitely going to do the same here in the US as it did in China. I can't believe that some countries were allowing Chinese citizens to fly into their countries without testing. That's all that was needed for another major resurgence globally.

Yes, of course, if people travel for one county to another without testing, then the disease will spread much more and become very difficult to control.

Aww hope you all feel better soon. Hopefully your wife won't catch it at all...it acts strangley that way sometimes. I second your garlic stuffed green olives, although the bleu cheese stuffed green olives are also top of my list. Oh yes, and the dram on ice is the best medicine!

Amstel is adorable. Perhaps he was just offering his own brand of bedside medicine LOL

Rest easy and heal...the new year will wait!

Thank you, Tamara! She did end up catching it, just tested positive today. : ( The bleu cheese stuffed olives are good too. I've met few olives I don't like. : )

Thanks, that little guy gets more compliments than any other dog we've ever owned. He's snuggled up with my wife now.

Luckily, I'm feeling nearly 100% after three days of suffering. I'm glad we both weren't sick at the same time.

Agreed, if there is a blessing in all of that, it is that you took turns with the illness. Now will be your turn to care for her....well you and Amstel LOL

Glad you are much improved and I hope your wife improves rapidly!

Yes, the roles reverse now. She's been sleeping mostly. I've been making the occasional cup of soup, tea, and water. That's been about all she's needed. Amstel is the best nurse. : ) Thank you, Tamara!

As they say; We make our plans and then life happens.
Sad to read about the infections, but thankfully all will recover. (Sooner or later)
My daughter tested positive for Covid and her husband and two children tested negative.
They were in the midst of emigrating to the UK, so before the flight, she had to stay in isolation for 14 days here and then after testing negative, she had to stay in isolation for 14 days again upon their arrival in the UK. Oh, and she had no symptoms at all to start with.

It's a strange world that we live in and get well soon my friend.

!BEER

That is the God's honest truth. We must take life as it comes to a certain extent. Flexibility is key in the age of Covid.

I bet that was a nightmare for your daughter's family and probably expensive for those temporary accommodations.

Thank you my friend!

Flexibility is certainly the answer, that and God's protection, as we have not had Covid. I am high risk, as high blood pressure and some other chronic ailments and if Covid has to touch me, I will not make it.

Oh yes, a nightmare and thankfully the company in the UK that imported her took care of some of the costs on the UK side. But it was still a difficult burden on them.

Thank you also for being a friend.

I pray that you continue to steer clear of it because even this weaker variant, at least for us, was no walk in the park. I'm glad your daughter's family didn't have to shoulder all of the financial burden for that move.

Thank you as well. I wish you a wonderful week!

Well, it's all in God's hands and we do take care with portable sanitizers and stuff.
Thank you for the prayer and the care.

Indeed, as if they still had to bear the UK costs in isolation for a family of four, it would have bankrupted them. Thankfully they only had to cover the South African costs.

There is very bad news circulating in the media about another new wave of the plague in China, and they reckon that it will soon infiltrate worldwide.

So please take care my friend.

I am very sorry for you, I hope you recover quickly and have healthy days with your family.🌸
Unfortunately the covid is determined not to leave our world, it seems that hurting us is not enough

I appreciate the kind words! It looks like this virus will be with us forever at this point. I just hope it mutates to be less severe.

It turns out that the covid19 variant is not over yet. Get well soon, Eric. Happy new year to you and your extended family. God bless you .

Thank you Eliana! I don't think it will ever be over, unfortunately. I think we'll have a "covid season" just like we have a "flu season". I'm praying the variants continue to get less severe as they mutate. Happy New Year my friend!

Bad luck for you and your beloved ones. In fact, I wasn't feeling good during the new year eve, I think I have got cold.

Happy New Year, Happy 2.0 Celebration :)

Yes! There are so many illnesses circulating right now.

Thank you! Happy New Year to you as well. I hope you're feeling better!

Thank you, I think I will in a few days.

I'm so sorry to hear you got sick on NY eye. Ages ago, I celebrated at friend's house, and found out I have a feaver. And while everyone was drinkling sparkling wine, I had to take effervescent aspirin 😁 On the next day I found out I have chickenpox 😬😬😬

But as you said, there are people you didn't survive covid. You will get well and celebrate NY 2.0 according to the Chinese calendar. Just an idea 😉

Speedy recovery 💪🤗

Thanks my friend. I'm feeling much better today (3rd day after testing positive). Oh, the chickenpox were the worst! I had them when I was 15. They say it's easier if you get them when you're young. How old were you?

Not a bad idea to celebrate NY 2.0 on Chinese NY!

Thanks, I walked Amstel for the first time outside in days (in a snowstorm) and managed pretty well. One thing makes me sad though....coffee no longer tastes the same. It smells like ammonia and tastes completely flat, as though it's stale. I hope this isn't permanent because I look forward to my morning cup.

I hope all is well with you over there. We think about you guys every day!

I was 25 when I had a chickenpox. I spent 21 day (maximum allowed for sick leave) in a bad and every day I thought my body slowly dies.

I believe your sense will slowly get back, and let you enjoy your morning coffee again 🥰☕

!BEER

Oh wow, I bet it was much worse for you at 25 than it was for me at 15. I was sick for maybe a week with chickenpox. It's horrible to feel that bad.

I'm very happy to report that coffee tasted (almost) normal again this morning. Whew! I would've really missed coffee.

Hope all is well over there!

Excellent news! 🥳 Now take your time 🤗

We quietly these days. Power was off today for just one hours. I am looking forward to celebrating our Christmas. Hope it is the last year when we celebrate not with other Christian world.

Take care!
XOXO

That sucks. I hope you get feeling better. My dad had the whole sensitive skin thing. It was brutal for him. We had to take him to the ER. That was before we knew he had Covid. They couldn't get him out of there fast enough once he tested positive. You are lucky you get to take the good cough syrup. I have high BP so I have to take the less effective stuff when I get sick 😝

The symptoms are something else. They're so different from person to person too. Three days after testing positive (six days after first symptoms), I'm nearly feeling back to normal. Still have a little congestion and my taste/smell is now off for acidic things. This just started this morning.

Sorry that you have to deal with that. I am glad you are doing better though!

Thank you! I feel pretty amazing today, the wife not so much. Thankfully coffee tasted semi-normal this morning so it wasn't wasn't a permanent thing.

That is good. My friend got sick a while ago and his taste still isn't quite right. I hope your wife gets well soon.

I like the sound of these remedies. You're dose should similar to my last one, it took me ages to shift that cough!

Fingers crossed you shake it off quick. Amstel has the most amazing big eyes!

They sure do work. The cough, for me, only lasted three days. It's mostly gone now. Still getting the occasional stabbing pain out of nowhere, random joint aches that come and go, and a little congestion. I've heard not to get too cocky though because if you overdo it too soon it can rebound.

Thank you! He's learned how to use those eyes to play people like a fiddle. : )

ohhh man i'm so sorry to read you got covid, it is not a easy desease and you should not drink alcohol because t could start a inflamatory response in your body and leave you post-covid syntomphs that are the worse of this, other than that you are doing an excellent work taking care of you, rest a lot!

Thanks, and I appreciate the advice on the alcohol. I did a little research and, you're right! I stopped my daily dram until this is done with.

I knew it because it happened to me :(

I hope it didn't have any long term effects!

Happy New Year!

I'm sorry to hear that you have Covid and that New Year's Eve plans were ruined. But I hope you recover soon and that the symptoms these days are mild.

Ginger tea is wonderful and if you add turmeric to it, it's even better. And I'm sure A dram of whiskey on ice helps too;) 😆
Take care!

Thanks and Happy New Year to you!

We actually have a ginger tea that already has turmeric in it. It's a great combination of flavors too.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that you are sick, Eric! There is a saying, "Tell God your plans and he will laugh at them." It's one thing what you plan and another thing what God decides. At home they have also been a bit cold and have had lots of ginger tea, turmeric, lemon and honey. They've also had purple onion syrups, with aloe, pepper and honey. The whiskey also helps, if only to forget the sickness. hahaha. I wish this new year to be a thousand times better than 2022 and health, lots of health, to enjoy the good things that life has in store for you. Get well soon and take care of yourself. Hugs

Thank you Nancy! The herbal teas helped me more than anything. The onion syrup sounds interesting! I've never heard of that! I really appreciate the kind words. I feel amazing today. I'm actually going to test again because I'm thinking I'll test negative now on Day 4. My wife, unfortunately, is having a really tough time with it. She's on Day 2 now. She should be getting better every day. I appreciate your comment!

I read ur post and I like one things is u like to spend time with family and I would also like to spend my time with family 🙂 I pray that this COVID virus will be eradicated from the whole world 🌎and best wishes for you

Thanks! Happy 2023!

I had it during new year's eve in 2021... It sucks, but you'll get over it. Wish you a fast recovery nevertheless!

Thank you! This variant seems to be a completely different animal (much less potent) compared to the earlier ones!

I have a strong feeling this year will be my best year

I hope it is! Leading with that kind of attitude will definitely make it so.

I hope it is! Leading with that kind of attitude will definitely make it so.

Definitely 🥰

I really wish you a fast recovery and happy new year @ericvancewalton

Thank you! Happy New Year to you!

Wishing u fast recovery and happy new year

Wishing u fast recovery and happy new year

This is not really nice to start the year with but I believe you will be fine and I wish you a quick recovery.

It's only up from here! Thankfully, I think the worst of it is behind me. Thank you!

It's only up from here! Thankfully, I think the worst of it is behind me. Thank you!

It's a pity that it happened. Take care of yourself, there are complications from covid. In our country, the war pushed covid into the background and nothing is heard about it in the news

Thank you! I can imagine priorities shift during wartime. Are you from Ukraine?
